not great as an audiobook
- By Anonymous User on 23-05-19
Summary
There is a new revolution happening in sports as more and more athletes are basing their success on this game-changing combination: health, nutrition, training, recovery, and mindset. Unfortunately, the evidence-based techniques that the expert PhDs, academic institutions, and professional performance staffs follow can be in stark contrast to what many athletes actually practice. When combined with the noise of social media, old-school traditions, and bro-science, it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction.
Peak is a groundbreaking book exploring the fundamentals of high performance (not the fads), the importance of consistency (not extreme effort), and the value of patience (not rapid transformation). Dr. Marc Bubbs makes deep science easy-to-understand, and with information from leading experts who are influencing the top performers in sports on how to achieve world-class success, he lays out the record-breaking feats of athleticism, and strategies that are rooted in this personalized approach. Dr. Bubbs expertly brings together the worlds of health, nutrition, and exercise, and synthesizes the salient science into actionable guidance. Regardless if you’re trying to improve your physique, propel your endurance, or improve your team’s record, looking at performance through this lens is absolutely critical for lasting success.

Not suitable as an Audi book
As per several other reviews the narration is very hard to listen to but I did get used to it. However, the contents are very detailed and lots of numbers and ratios quoted for nutrition etc that are hard to absorb in audio format but can be underlined and highlighted in hard copy. This book is really fir the elite, very serious sportsperson or professional practitioner. There is a heavy reliance on ‘evidence’ that in places I am sure will be disputed in time as science progresses.

Extremely useful
Good insight into different factors that affect performance, all supported my a vastly detailed scientific explanation. Many practical suggestions, but if you are not one for detail, then some parts might be a bit overwhelming. Highly recommended, if you are an athlete or are training athletes on any level.

Probably better in hardback
As a strength and conditioning coach, I absolutely loved this book. My low overall score has more to do with me than the book. I personally found it hard to absorb this and found myself having to re-listen to segments over and over again. I think this would be better in hardback.

Please get a professional narrator....
The narrator sounds so close to a computer voice, at times I wondered if it actually WAS narrated by a computer. The monotone, lack of inflection, awkward pauses...its almost too much. Im afraid that the audiobook version of this otherwise good book will cause alot of people to miss out on useful information. It truly, truly is a struggle to focus and listen to this narrator.

Awesome!
My favorite part about this book is that the author asks many questions that he then goes on to answer objectively with sound scientific research. He doesn’t add his own opinion unless clearly stated and he doesn’t exaggerate or underestimate findings. It is clear and a book you may want to put on repeat a few times until you’re able to understand all of the concepts. They are scholarly and can give your brain a little twist if you’re not a commoner of functional medicine principles.

I learned a lot from this title, It was a little tough to follow in audiobook format, because it was so information dense, but information is good! The information goes beyond most of the stuff you read online and in magazines, and the author takes pains to explain the underlying research.

This book is very well narrated considering the high caliber content included in every chapter. I use Audible.com to preview books on my Amazon.com wish list. This is definitely one of those books that I will proceed to purchase the hardcover version. There’s so much to learn from that it simply requires more than just listening to it. Love this book!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It was so refreshing to hear unbiased data accumulated in one place and presented in a clear manner. There’s no bs, assumptions, or opinions. Marc tells it like it is, like a true researcher. A word of caution - it is very dry, and reads like a textbook. I disagree with the comment that his voice sounds like a robot. His voice didn’t bother me at all, I thought it suited the content and was clear and consistent throughout. You have to like getting real nerdy about data and research studies, though - which I personally love. Let’s cut through the bs and get to the real outcomes! Marc did an amazing, thorough job, and presented the content very clearly and articulately. I feel so much more informed about how to take his research and implement it into my own sports training and nutrition regimen.
