The empire series was amazing, and this trilogy is as good. The lives of centurions on both sides at its heart, but with the background of revolt and civil war, concentration is paramount. The detail, historical research, embilished with deep characterisation , makes this a must read for fans of historical fiction. I bought this as soon as I recieved email of its availability, and wait with baited breath for the final part, and all of Anthony Riches further work.

I’m a fan of Anthony Riches novels but this a big disappointment. The narrator is woeful. One of the worst I’ve ever come across. The action involves Germanic tribes and his attempt at German accents are laughable. His delivery is odd with emphasis and pauses that make the prose hard to follow. The novel to me is not well written. So much information is passed on via dialogue that it makes conversations between characters rather absurd, long descriptions of troop movements, political situation in the empire in amongst family greetings etc. There are a lot characters settings and these were hard to grasp with this poor narrator. I think l will try to read this at some time in the future as it might improve as the narrative progresses and I’ve enjoyed all Riches’ previous work. This audio book is one to avoid.
