Summary

Olivia Colman reads an abridged version E. Nesbit's classic novel. The Railway Children is a masterpiece of children's fiction. It wonderfully evokes a bygone age and is packed with fun, excitement and adventure.

When their father goes away unexpectedly, Roberta (Bobbie), Peter and Phyllis have to move from London to a cottage in the countryside. At the local station they make friends with the porter, Perks, and spend their time waving to the passengers on the trains. But although they have many adventures, one question still remains: is their father ever coming back?

The story of the children's attempt to avert disaster on the line, the mystery surrounding their father and Bobbie's resourcefulness has been cherished by generations.

Please note: this is an abridged version of The Railway Children.

Massively Abridged

I should think the original is about 6 hours long, but this is less than 1! Such a shame to miss to much of the book.

Not the complete story

Huge chunks of the original story is missing from this audiobook. Quite disappointing. However, what there is of it is read beautifully by Olivia Coleman.

Abridged version

I was disappointed to find on listening that this was an abridged (1 hour) version - it wasn’t clearly advertised as such on Amazon. I still cried at “Daddy, oh my Daddy!” though...

Abridged…why bother

Why get someone with such a wonderful voice as Olivia Coleman to read an abridged version? Why not the full version? I just don’t get it..?

Disappointing Shortened version

Disappointingly this is an abridged version of such a wonderful classic. Read the full version!

Abridged but lovely

This version is hugely abridged but nevertheless quite delightful. Olivia Colemans performance is gorgeous.

well read and engaging

Olivia Coleman has just the right voice for the story, and although it is massively abridged, it is edited so well it stands up strong as a complete story in 1hr.

Heavily abridged

Avoid - this is so heavily abridged that much of the story is lost altogether.
Audible does not say that it’s abridged.

Olivia Colman reads what’s left of the story very well.

Colman Audio Version is Abridged

The audio version read by Olivia Coleman is definitely abridged. There was nothing in the listing that mentioned this. I generally avoid abridged books, so this was disappointing. The strangest part, though, is what was cut out. The dramatic rescue where Bobbi stops the train and saves a bunch of people? Glossed over in a single paragraph with no detail. Mother’s beautiful poetic response when asked if she would prefer to be writing their story? Completely gone.
The narrator was the best part, as her voice fits the story perfectly. I hate to steer anyone away from a great narrator, but if you love the original Railway Children book, or hope to love it, skip this audio version.

Incomplete

They left out about half of the book, perhaps more. Would have liked a warning.
