Over the horizon came ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There went the good old days, when humans got killed only by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. Sci-fi for beginnerd
As my feelings about this book are identical to those of the first I have simply copy and pasted that review for this book and will do so far the third book and fourth book of the series.
I don't want to say too much right now as I'm writing this at a time when I'm half way through listening to the fifth book, and that alone should tell you something.
I usually only listen to educational books but fancied something a little less mentally taxing, and so went to browse the sci-fi section for a stand alone story. I found 'Not Alone' but wasn't immediately persuaded so added it to a list to enable easy location later, and continued searching. Obviously that search returned little else of interest so I started listening.
First impressions were not great. I felt the narration was dreary, and the story didn't seem to be going in the direction I expected or desired.
I increased the speed slightly to 1.20 which was much more pleasant, and the more I got used to his voice the less I could imagine anybody else reading it. Now half way through book five I feel it just wouldn't work with a different voice.
The story it's self whilst not what I expected, got more and more interesting to the point where despite seeking a stand alone story, I was thrilled to learn of additional books.
There are a few unnecessary additions to the story which lead nowhere and could easily be removed but not enough to lower my rating. Also worth mentioning is how easy things are for the characters. Many times circumstances just happen to be right which is quite obviously unrealistic, as is the statuses the main characters find themselves as, and their methods of achieving those statuses. Like I said though, this is sci-fi for beginners.
As for the characters themselves, I believe they are the reason I still listen. Witnessing how they develop themselves as well as how the relationships with each other develop is nice, although again it seems to happen very easily and exactly how the reader would want, with very little tension. The narrator gives each character - well...each of the main characters, the perfect voice, and the story details them to such an extent that I'm sure I'd recognise them in the street.
This series is perfect if you:
Are looking for your first sci-fi series.
Enjoy rolling your eyes at the obvious.
Are more interested in characters than story but still like a good story.
This series is not for you if you:
Are looking for a single book.
Consider yourself any further along than 'introductory' in your exploration of the genre.
You enjoy 'it could happen'.
The following three books in this series would receive near identical reviews from me as my feelings match my words. Currently my thoughts differ for the fifth book so I will likely write a different review, but of course I will complete the book prior to sharing my final thoughts.

The last 3 books should be one
Unfortunately, once I start a book, I finish a book. If I enjoy book one of a series i.e. get emotionally involved with characters, I am compelled to finish the series. So I listened to the bitter end, despite the clunky writing, the constant recapping (that would ensure a goldfish could remember the plot from start to finish) and the lack of flesh on characters. People’s motivations appear to change for poor reasons, so characters go against type. Some main characters are sidelined (in a variety of ways) to make room for others and this is irksome.
Apart from the (often times badly worded and way too extensive) recaps - sometimes reminding you of something you read earlier in the chapter - there is way too much telling. Explaining why a character does a relatively unimportant (therefore relevance?) thing, rather than relying on it being obvious or letting the character explain, makes it a tedious listen. Some things are also better left to the imagination than over explained.
The ideas are great, the plot could have been expanded in any number of ways, but as it was, the plot line could be condensed into a more entertaining and less wordy book 4, rather than the flabby and infuriating books 4-6.

Excellent series and great narration
Great series love all the group agenda stuff I mean who is in charge of first contact and beyond first contact and all the cool alien tech that may come with it or should we even allow ourselves the alien tech. Maybe the aliens choose for us or maybe they dont. If the aliens want a particular civilian in charge do the government's of earth allow it, there is that stuff and much more in this series and the narrator is becoming one of my favorites in the scifi genre.

Flawed writing foreshadows worse things to come
Having given up on C.A. Falconer halfway through the fifth book of this series, I regret ignoring the warning signs in this fourth book.
I'm still fascinated by the overall plot. Dan and Emma's increasing selfishness of "protect our child at any cost" seems at odds with their previously selfless behaviour, but the "defending momma bear" trope is not unusual.
However, the amount of time spent reminding you of all the previous events that affected a character, then dwelling on the character's own speculation about the future, with a tiny bit of actual plot advancement mixed in - in every chapter - mean this book moves slowly. And that poor, slow writing style only gets worse in the next novel.
The over-used trope of "no matter how bad Dan thought it would be, he would never have guessed how bad the truth would be" reads like bad click-bait. The characters, the story and any quality writing are now obscured behind this space filling, empty writing style.
I pushed through this novel because I am still interested in the story and hoped it would get better. It wasn't worth it.

Not Alone Series
This is a very long series, close to 100 hours of listening in the unabridged audiobook format of six novels. Given the length, you need a voice pleasant to hear and James Patrick Cronin does a terrific job throughout. Pacing, tempo, male and female voices, etc., overall production very well done. Not Alone is a SciFi series and Book One was released in August of 2016, book 6 in June of 2020, all by Audible Studios. Not Alone is character-driven, albeit few main characters – which is nice listening and you get to know everyone. No need for struggling to keep track of who-is-who, and thanks to the excellent narration, no problems with who-is-speaking-to-who.
Plot. Dan McCarthy, while riding his bike on a delivery, collides with a robber who drops an envelope containing definitive proof of a government cover-up. Human knowledge of aliens, i.e., we are Not Alone, has been a fact since 1938. Early on, you're skeptical and before the books are finished - well, no spoilers. But, SciFi lovers will be beyond pleased as Dan's amazing adventures unfold. Start with book one, and read in sequence or you'll miss a great deal.
Liked. Character development, humanoid, and otherwise. You like most, hate a few. The ultimate goodness of mankind, and any potential visitors, is something we all wish to be true.
Not so hot? Repetitive. Most noticeable in the series, Falconer re-caps a great deal, almost as if he needs to remind himself where the plot is and how we got here, reading from his own notes. Painful to listen to for anyone who is binge-listening to all six books in the series. Kept mumbling, 'Yeah, yeah, I know, I know - move on." Actually did have to fast-forward a bit.
No clicking knees, not a blood-and-guts type horror SciFi. This is a first contact story out of a vivid imagination telling us what it might really be like. World politics, wonder, fear, greed, hope - it's all here. No sex, nothing offensive. Recommended!
