Summary

Max Hastings is best known as an acclaimed journalist and military historian. But what is perhaps less well known is his love of the countryside and its pursuits, above all fishing and shooting, which he indulges as often as he can escape his urban working environment.

In this classic selection of gentle, contemplative musings, Max Hastings shares some of his favourite rural moments; tramping the snipe bogs of Waterford; dogging hedges in Hampshire and moors in Sutherland; casting a fly from Scotland to Iceland and Alaska; and shooting in India and the west of Ireland. Combining a journalist's knack for storytelling with the enthusiasm of the dedicated amateur, Outside Days is the perfect companion for anyone who revels in the freedom of the outdoors.

Max Hastings is an acclaimed journalist and author of over 20 books. He is renowned for his works of military history, such as Bomber Command and Das Reich. But he is a country boy at heart and he enjoys fishing and shooting as often as he can escape to the great outdoors.

Superb.

I have lost count of the number of times I have listened to this book.
Beautifully written by an author devoted to nature, rural life and field sports.
Very well narrated. 10/10 all round.

Brilliant writing and presentation, loved it

Is anyone is genuinely interested in the value of counter pursuits, and want to know where sone of ours most delicious food comes from in the form of wild game, then this is the book. Fantastic, thanks Max.

Enjoyable

I’m a big fan of Max Hastings and enjoyed this, albeit just slightly different from the usual subject matter of war.

Interesting even if you’re anti field sports..

I found this book very informative even though I have avoided hunting and shooting. Interesting even if don’t agree with principles. Since it was written 40 years ago some might find the attitudes difficult to hear. Nonetheless I learned a huge amount about different shooting terminology and how different breeds of dogs are used for different birds.
Descriptions of Scotland were very evocative.
It was also very funny in places.

Not all that relatable

A series of older articles however relatively politically charged. As a keen advocate and a passionate shooting and fishing man, this didn’t engage with me as I hoped.

only good if you enjoy hunting, shooting and fishi

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

People who love shooting, fishing and hunting and eating their catch afterwards.

What will your next listen be?

Don't know. I've a few on the go.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

None.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Anger and disappointment. The title didn't make me think it was a book about field sports, just someone interested and observing nature.

Any additional comments?

I listened to the book as I want to try most things and I appreciated the writing, if not the topic. foolish me for not reading the publisher's summary before buying. I hate field sports and the title didn't suggest to me that this would be about such a topic.

Awful!!

Listened to about three minutes before realising it was a upper class dude claiming to love nature while at the same time taking great joy in killing the wildlife within said nature. I felt dirty listening to those 3 minutes. The author, and the guy who read it, should be ashamed of themselves.

not great

Tedious . The voice is ok but the narrative doesnt seem to have any interesting anecdotes.
