    "Full of facts"

Was unsure about purchasing this book but from the first chapter it fascinated me. So much information on the history of England, Scotland France and America. The sight down side is that it's very American oriented but if you can get passed that you should love it.
The author has done a good job of giving loads of information but without giving away the secrets of Freemasonry.
Think that it's one I will be listening to again.

"This should be required for all new Freemasons!"

I learned so much history from this book! It was more educational then I could have ever hopped for. This book is great for Freemasons of many years, new Freemasons, Freemasons looking to join other Masonic groups or just the general public who want to know more about freemasonry or for people who may want to join a lodge.

    "Grain of salt, but educational/informative"
Would you consider the audio edition of Freemasons for Dummies, 2nd Edition to be better than the print version?

Didn't read the print version. I'd say no, because even the narrator noted that it's a reference (so random chapter would be easier on paper than in an audio format) - at least with current labeling.

What did you like best about this story?

The narrator did a great job of explaining/reading in a way that wasn't "PhD instructor" and was more "friend who has answers". If that made sense.

Which character – as performed by Tom Dheere – was your favorite?

    Not that kind of book.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The book noted that there is no one Freemason speaker, leader, authority. Unfortunately that applies to this book as well, but felt very honest.

    Story
"All that I know about Masonry I learned here."

Wow.... Where to start. Well I guess I will start by saying I don't think Masonry is for me. The Free Masons are described in this book as bunch of guys looking for fellowship, and a sense of community and even entertainment through fraternal brotherhood. That sounds a lot like my college fraternity, albeit with less beer and parties. I may be wrong. I will read comments to this post and I would be happy to be corrected in my thinking on this.

The charities and good works of the many Masonic organization are unparalleled. I don't think anyone can argue otherwise.

The striving to build character through lessons and a bit of theater all seem fine. If that's what your into. I'm happy with my character as it is and the pageantry seems odd to me.

What REALLY stood out to me is that this organization in its myriad of forms has been persecuted by every tyrant, including Popes, for the last 400 years. Yet the Mason forbid themselves call out tyranny with its many forms in the lodges. Many of this country's founding fathers were Masons. They were calling out tranny everyday. If it to be believed everywhere accept in the lodge. I am not sure how to square that one. How is someone going to discuss philosophy and morality and big ideas of the time without discussing politics. I doubt that it can be done with any intellectual honesty.

If Free Masonry is just a world wide brotherhood of guys who like bean suppers and a bit of theater on the odd weekend or so and not a group of like minded men who seek to change the world or sway its politics toward liberty and justice for all, then I say what a HUGE wasted opportunity and a HUGE waste of time. The theories of how Masons helped act a an unseen rudder for the world was really a cool idea. Lost.

    Any additional comments?

The internet is an incredible tool for learning about almost anything you'd care to dive into. Unfortunately, getting a solid understanding of Freemasonry from the outside is something that the internet cannot help you do (unless of course you want to believe the many far-fetched conspiracy theories). Enter 'Freemasonry for Dummies' stage east. As someone who is very much interested in joining the fraternity, I wanted to know what I was getting into (and whether there was anything that would run counter to my faith). I discovered this book in my searching, and truly enjoyed listening to it in entirety. As odd as it is to say, this is by far the most entertaining "reference manual" I've ever come across. If you are new to the craft, considering becoming a member, or want to know the truth behind the myths, I would recommend this book to you.
