About this listen

"I've awakened in a stone box about the size of a large coffin.... I'm filthy, everything aches, and, by the various so-called gods, I smell awful. I've woken up in worse places. Hmm. What does that say about my life choices?" (Eric, amateur magician, part-time vampire, and accidental king)

It's not easy being king. Especially when you've got an allergy to sunrise and sunset, a fire goddess for a mother-in-law, demonic adversaries, random assassins, and a basement full of insecurities to cope with. Add to that his daughter, the fire priestess/princess; a couple of lightly deranged professional magicians; a whole city full of wizards; and enough squabbling princes to resemble a kindergarten argument. It's enough to make a man want to just go home. Luckily for Eric, he has the world's fastest pet rock, a smart-mouthed sword, and a horse that not only understands him but likes him anyway.

I initially was worried that the book would be too long but it wasn't long enough! I've also listened to the book before and this was just as good if not better. As always, Sean Runnette was brilliant and brought the characters fully to life.

Amazing story and great narrator.

Good sequel to the first book. Both these books are great stories, hours of entertainment. Good combination of fantasy meets vampire. Not usually into vampiric tales but this is a blend of fantasy so makes it more interesting. Narration is really very good, was initially put off by American accent, but quickly realised the narrator is right for the book. Story itself is pretty original and very detailed, really recommend this series, hope there is more to come.

Good Listening

The story starts 79 years later: almost all the main characters of the first book are dead. That's a bummer if you're emotionally invested. Very entertaining though but a very abrupt ending that might disappoint.
