Gotta love a happy ending
Murder in Profile is the first in a new series and, as such, ably introduced the main characters as well as telling a good story. Claire is a very small time publisher who specialises in books whose authors who have died before their writings have made it into the world. She is assisted by her close friend and former husband, Ed, anyone edits, tidies and often rewrites parts of the selected volumes. She also has other people to call on for help including a lawyer and an investigator to help ease the legal difficulties which frequently arrise in the process. One manuscript Claire is keen to publish when copyright can be sorted comes from a young, rather naive woman named Annie. The book, in the form of a journal, had belonged to Scott, a man she met on Facebook. Their relationship was steadily strengthening until she was told of his unexpected death in a plane crash and the police forwarded his belongings, including the journal, to her as next of kin. On reading it, she had found that Scott was not the person she had believed him to be...
The book is written in the first person, told by Claire, the publisher. It is offer a mistake for an author to read their own work but this is not so for author Kay Hartford, whose slightly husky voice perfectly conjures up the persona of the hard working, dedicated publisher, who has to balance firmness with tact. With a steady delivery and good intonation, Ms.Hartford tells her story directly to the reader without attempting to replicate other character voices, in the same way that someone would do in real life. It works well.
Nicely written with good characterisation and story, including three very minor sub plots with other potential clients, there is a glimpse into the workings behind a small publishing company and even of the film world which feels authentic. The story also carries an inherent warning about the dangers of social media. My thanks to the rights holder of Murder in Profile who, at my request, freely gifted me a complimentary copy, via Audiobook Boom. It was an enjoyable, involving read and I very much look forward to book two.

Interesting Story
I love when a book can make you think outside of the box. I, for one, have never considered, my "friends" on my social media accounts, having someone that can prey on others-yes, I know it happens, but the way Kay Hartford puts this thought into writing, makes it a little frightening. The plot kept me on my toes, which I loved!
The narration was done by the author, which was not bad, however, I like when each character has their own voice, it makes it easier to distinguish-but that is just my preference.

A manuscript leads to murder
In Murder in Profile by Kay Hartford, Gracie Michaels runs a publishing house that publishes books by only people no longer alive. One day she gets a manuscript from a woman named Annie Forsberg, who was given the book by the police upon the death of its author in an airplane crash. Annie explains that she met Scott Moore on Facebook, but just as things started to heat up between them, he went black. A little while later, the police gave the manuscript to Annie. In it, Scott admits to being really Peter Larson and explains his whole process for catfishing women and getting them to give him money. But after Scott gets killed in a plane crash, the police see Annie's name on his manuscript and give it to her as his heir. She has now approached Gracie to publish this book as warning to other women. As Gracie and her significant other editor, Ed, become closer to Annie, they discover that the manuscript comes fraught with danger.
Murder in Profile is filled with anticipation over the happenings in Annie's life, events that have repercussions in the lives of Gracie and Ed. The plot keeps moving, but not so fast as to make it an intense thriller. It offers a couple significant twists in the middle that make the listener gasp. There are several significant characters in the book, but only Annie, Gracie, and eventually Ed come across as well- rounded characters. However, they are all that is needed to give the book depth.
The audiobook is narrated by the author, Kay Hartford. I suspect the book would have been more effective had it been performed by a professional narrator with greater expression, but it still provided enjoyment. With careful deliberation, Hartford holds back, keeping the pace from speeding up in a wise move.
Murder in Profile was a creative book that deals with a genuine problem, that of Internet scammers and stalkers. We learn some important lessons without the book's having been at all didactic. I appreciated the exciting book and give it four stars.

I really liked this book. It got me thinking is there really Publishers who only deal with dead authors. I guess I will have to Google that. Very fun book will look for more by this author. Hard to categororize this one
It's not exactly a mystery, nor is it a thriller. I'd call it a character-driven crime novel. I really enjoyed the premise of a publisher who only considers the works of death authors, and the characters themselves are very engaging. For that reason, I'd read another in this series. However, the author needs to reconsider her choice of self-narration and invest in a pro. Her voice was good, not great, but there wasn't enough distinction between characters, which at times made me wonder just who was speaking. Overall, though, it's a strong start and I enjoyed it.
I received a free copy of this audiobook from Audiobook Boom. I am leaving this honest review voluntarily.

Careful who you talk to online.......
This is a good example to show you don't have any idea who you are talking to online. This book shows how easy it is to manipulate people and make them believe you are who and what you are not. Scott/Peter is out to lie, cheat and scam unsuspecting females. It was an interesting book with a good plot surrounding a publisher who only publishes books by dead people but it's a good lesson on believing you know who you are chatting with online. I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator.
