Summary

Humanity is tired of losing. Enter the mech.

Jake Price has always dreamed of joining the Darkstream military like his father before him. When he’s told his gaming scores are good enough to qualify him for a brand-new training program designed to find recruits talented enough to pilot humanity’s first mechs, he can hardly believe it.

He’s right to be doubtful. There are hundreds of other recruits competing for the same eight jobs, and they’re all as skilled as he is. Worse, the training instructor is an unhinged chief with a particular dislike for Jake.

But Jake refuses to give up, refuses to wash out, because humanity is facing its greatest threat yet. If someone doesn’t step up, it could all be over for the human species.

worth your time

the constant internal monolog of the many characters gets fairly annoying, enjoyed the book over all

repetitive action

repetitive story with a lack of emotional link to contents or characters. found that it easily altered the characters personality to push story line ideas that in the big picture didn't change much other than allowing for the repetitive battles to follow the same stages of story as the previous battle, normally in the same location.
I listened to the end as I felt the story did have potential to go somewhere interesting, but in the end I was left disappointed with nothing feeling like it was resolved or that the characters had grown or developed in a way that made me care about their journey. The performance was good & well read but the story failed to draw me in.

It’s Mechs. What more do you want?

I loved this series. Lots of action and a well put together story. Highly recommendable.

Mostly flash but still fun

I’m a big fan of mech shows and I’ve been wanting an author to tackle mechs in more sci books. I feel like it’s a genre that deserves to be explored more. That being said this is a nice step but in the end not what o wanted.

The science just didn’t feel believable and would take my out of my immersion. That being said I had plenty of fun and for one credit it was a decent investment

Typical Mech Battle Story

Nothing new here ... pretty good classic Mech lingo and tech. As a 4 book package a enjoyable read ... but 4 credits for 4 books would not be just. Characters never really gelled.

Save yourself the time.

The story is sub par. It's break points are jarring. It's written as four books but each book ends at a fairly abitrary point. The structure of book seems like the author wrote one book and split it up. The conclusion is really weak and rushed with the last 30 minutes being packed with would be cliff hangers that just fall short. The characters are really one dimensional. You will pick up who the fodder characters are in minutes because they have virtually no characterization. Overall I would avoid this book. Narrator does a good job bringing some joy to a pretty bad book.

Another great book

Like the Ixan prophecies series this is a great collection of books! It bridges the gap between the Ixan prophecies and legacy.

Good Story and Great Narration!

All four books are seamless from one to the other. Story is original but I wish there was a little more info on what happened to force Darkstream to flee the sole system.

Great Universe Building, Kinda Racist Performance

I got through the first series and loved it, very good story I like the universe and the characters are interesting. It's not all perfect, but I think that's the hardest thing for a writer to convey. This book was a good addition to the universe and a great continuation of a loose thread from the first series. I feel like more species would have been warranted, but that didn't detract from the story that was told. My only grevence was the Asian English accent given to one of the female leads. I realize there are tons of other accents given to other nationalities, and they use those accents for Russian, Spanish, and British English, but giving a Korean woman a distinctly Chinese accent is really annoying to hear from a male performer.
