About this listen

A sweeping Christian fiction epic, Maximus is part mystery, part detective story, and filled with intrigue.

General Maximus is a battle-weary commander of one of Rome's finest legions. When he returns from a long, bloody campaign, he finds himself questioning his life. Word has reached Rome of a man named Jesus, who is causing a stir in faraway Judea. Maximus, disguised as a Jew, is sent to investigate the situation and assess his potential threat to Rome. In this innovative rendering of the story of Christ, we see Jesus from the perspective of an outsider. Stripped of his cultural identity, Maximus is therefore free to ponder whether he can believe Jesus and find a new purpose in his own life.

Not my usual type of book, but I enjoyed it once I accepted the strong American accent of Adam Verner who was good, actually. I liked the different voices he did.
It was interesting to hear Jesus's story from an unusual perspective.

Not my usual book but good.

the narrative flows well enough, but it is clear the author has limited understanding and knowledge of the historical period. other than the broadest outlines. There is a rather crude 'ahistorical' implanting of later century concepts and even post 18th century CE, ideas.

I didn't want this to end, and I hoped it would have continued on a bit longer than it did. It would have really made it complete, as it finished before the Resurrection took place which was a shame. It was action packed from start to finish and the characters came alive by the narrator. It described the social structures of the time and the reactions between them. Highly recommended.

Excellent all round

A brilliantly written and well read story of two Romans finding Christ and accepting Him as their Saviour. My only criticism is that the story cries out for a sequel as the ending leaves things a little bit in mid-air but, nevertheless, I highly recommend it

Refreshing to hear a roman historical novel which doesn't emphasise violence and is reflexive.
