About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Over 1 million Discworld audiobooks sold – discover the extraordinary universe of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld like never before.

The audiobook of Maskerade is narrated by Indira Varma (Game of Thrones; Luther; This Way Up). BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning actor Bill Nighy (Love Actually; Pirates of the Caribbean; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) reads the footnotes, and Peter Serafinowicz (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace; Shaun of the Dead) stars as the voice of Death. Featuring a new theme tune composed by James Hannigan.

'There's a kind of magic in masks. Masks conceal one face, but they reveal another. The one that only comes out in darkness....'

The Opera House in Ankh-Morpork is home to music, theatrics and a harmless masked Ghost who lurks behind the scenes. But now a set of mysterious backstage murders may just stop the show.

Agnes Nitt has left her rural home of Lancre in the hopes of launching a successful singing career in the big city. The only problem is, she doesn't quite look the part. And there are two witches who would much rather she return home to join their coven.

Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg have travelled to Ankh-Morpork to convince Agnes that life as a witch is much better than one on the stage. Only now they're caught up in a murder mystery featuring masks and maniacal laughter.

And the show MUST go on . . .

'Funny, delightfully inventive, and refuses to lie down in its genre' Observer

Maskerade is the fifth book in the Witches series, but you can listen to the Discworld novels in any order.

The first book in the Discworld series - The Colour of Magic - was published in 1983. Some elements of the Discworld universe may reflect this.

Critic reviews

'Pratchett is as funny as Wodehouse and as witty as Waugh'
'The great Terry Pratchett, whose wit is metaphysical, who creates an energetic and lively secondary world, who has a multifarious genius for strong parody ... who deals with death with startling originality. Who writes amazing sentences'
'Like Jonathan Swift, Pratchett uses his other world to hold up a distorting mirror to our own, and like Swift he is a satirist of enormous talent ... incredibly funny ... compulsively readable'
'Cracking dialogue, compelling illogic and unchained whimsy...Pratchett has a subject and a style that is very much his own'
'Entertaining and gloriously funny'

I have loved Maskerade since my first reading and Indira Varma performs it superbly, with the extra actor for Death adding a special something. Her grasp of the character voices is glorious.

Our favourite witches and an introduction to a new one made for an interesting listen. I've read this before but thought it would be worth a listen and it was. With more than a few chuckles along the way, Granny & Nanny enter the world of opera bringing their usual wit/wisdom with them. Nanny's recipes add an amusing break from the chaos.

Love it!

Thank goodness for Indira Varma. I’ve loved all things Terry Pratchett for more years than I care to mention but have not enjoyed previous audiobook incarnations. Indira Varma is beyond perfection, bringing the nuances, voices and personalities to life and a joy for me to listen to.

Sublime

I know and love Pratchetts witches. I have a very clear idea of what they sound like and Varma nails it. there are a lot of audio books that just don't quite hit the mark but this one rocks

if you're new to the witches then please listen to them in order, the characters build but this novel stands alone and so does Indira Varma.

one if the best vocal performances I've heard

I've started buying the penguin audiobooks as they give a different spin on them and it is well worth it, they feel like a different story with a well acted presentation

I already have most of Terrys audiobooks
