About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Over 1 million Discworld audiobooks sold – discover the extraordinary universe of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld like never before.

The audiobook of Maskerade is narrated by Indira Varma (Game of Thrones; Luther; This Way Up). BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning actor Bill Nighy (Love Actually; Pirates of the Caribbean; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) reads the footnotes, and Peter Serafinowicz (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace; Shaun of the Dead) stars as the voice of Death. Featuring a new theme tune composed by James Hannigan.

'There's a kind of magic in masks. Masks conceal one face, but they reveal another. The one that only comes out in darkness....'

The Opera House in Ankh-Morpork is home to music, theatrics and a harmless masked Ghost who lurks behind the scenes. But now a set of mysterious backstage murders may just stop the show.

Agnes Nitt has left her rural home of Lancre in the hopes of launching a successful singing career in the big city. The only problem is, she doesn't quite look the part. And there are two witches who would much rather she return home to join their coven.

Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg have travelled to Ankh-Morpork to convince Agnes that life as a witch is much better than one on the stage. Only now they're caught up in a murder mystery featuring masks and maniacal laughter.

And the show MUST go on . . .

'Funny, delightfully inventive, and refuses to lie down in its genre' Observer

Maskerade is the fifth book in the Witches series, but you can listen to the Discworld novels in any order.

The first book in the Discworld series - The Colour of Magic - was published in 1983. Some elements of the Discworld universe may reflect this.

Critic reviews

'Pratchett is as funny as Wodehouse and as witty as Waugh'
'The great Terry Pratchett, whose wit is metaphysical, who creates an energetic and lively secondary world, who has a multifarious genius for strong parody ... who deals with death with startling originality. Who writes amazing sentences'
'Like Jonathan Swift, Pratchett uses his other world to hold up a distorting mirror to our own, and like Swift he is a satirist of enormous talent ... incredibly funny ... compulsively readable'
'Cracking dialogue, compelling illogic and unchained whimsy...Pratchett has a subject and a style that is very much his own'
'Entertaining and gloriously funny'

I have loved Maskerade since my first reading and Indira Varma performs it superbly, with the extra actor for Death adding a special something. Her grasp of the character voices is glorious.

A new spin on a favoured tale

Perhaps not a popular choice, but this is one of my favourite Pratchett's (probably because I love opera).

The previous version irritated me so much because Agnes, who is supposed to be highly intelligent, was voiced as though she was an idiot, and no effort was made with Christine. Indira's Christine is delightful, and Agnes much more appropriately voiced.

It's not perfect on all fronts, but it's a very enjoyable listen and I'm glad to have it in my library.

Delightful

There isn't a day that goes by that I don't miss STP GNU. Insightful into the human condition as always.

When Nigel planer narrated this book I listened to it three times over. But this version surpasses the previous and is now my new favourite. I enjoy indira varmas narrative and her characterisations are superb. Peter serfinowiscz as death and bill nighy providing the little snippets keeps me entertained as I never used to read those bits.
