Summary

People who've been here a long time have been talking about him. This morning, when I was having my coffee and croissants, it was all they were talking about. The old folks, even the middle-aged people, remember him and can't understand how he could have become a tramp. Apparently he was a good-looking man, tall and strong, who had a good profession and made a very decent living. And yet he vanished overnight without saying a word to anyone.

The death of a homeless man in a condemned building in Les Halles leads Maigret on the trail of the vagrant's mysterious past and an event that happened years ago in the close-knit community of Montmartre.

Simenon does it again.

Gareth Armstrong is the sole narrator of all of Simenon's novels, as far as I'm aware. He's wonderful in those I've listened to so far, and l don't expect that to change. He's perfect. The Maigret novels are generally so short they almost seem to be long novellas. That's not a weakness but a real strength. Not a single word or expressed thought is wasted. This book is a French police procedural type story with virtually no aspect of whodunit. But that's not really Simenon's intent. The manner in which he lovingly presents his great French detective is immediately catching, and l love the rather terse manner in which Maigret seeks answers, without malice, to his machine-gun fire questions. What's even more affecting in this wonderful character is his modesty and unwillingness to seek the limelight, and his quiet understanding of the minds of the criminals he seeks to ensnare and capture.

Superb

Well, I have listened to quite a few Maigrets and this one is one of the very best, if not THE best. It has everything including, unlike many Maigret stories, a great ending. It is completely absorbing. Buy it - you won’t be disappointed. As usual, Gareth Armstrong’s narration is simply fantastic - he IS Maigret.

The usual Maigret

A book you can listen to in an afternoon. Another Maigret that did not disappoint.
