About this listen

It's World War II and Ludwika Gierz, a young Polish woman, is forced to leave her family and go to Nazi Germany to work for an SS officer. There, she must walk a tightrope, learning to live as a second-class citizen in a world where one wrong word could spell disaster and every day could be her last. Based on real events, this is a story of hope amid despair, of love amid loss...ultimately, it's one woman's story of survival.

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

Catatonic patients at a mental hospital.

What could Christoph Fischer have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Create a more believable heroine. Ludwigia come across as a dim wit who is doomed to make all the wrong choices so that the author can insert her narrative into a high school world history book.

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Tessa Petersen?

Daffy Duck could have done a better job. The narrator is flat, unemotional and boring. If I could have rated it zero, I would have.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Not really

Any additional comments?

I just don't understand how this book got so many high ratings. There is nothing new, inventive or thought provoking here,
