About this listen

The shocking true story of a young boy hidden away from his family and the world in a Catholic home for unmarried mothers in 1950s Dublin.

Born an 'unfortunate' onto the rough streets of 1950s Dublin, this is the incredible true story of a young boy, a secret child born into a home for unmarried mothers in 1950s Dublin and a mother determined to keep her child, even if it meant hiding him from her own family and the rest of the world.

Despite the poverty, hardship and isolation, the pride and hope of a community of women who banded together to raise their children would give this boy his chance to find his real family.

A wonderfully heartwarming and evocative tale of working class life in 1950s Dublin and 1960s London.

Brilliant and very moving , a tough life that made Gordon what he is today, people of today don’t realise what tough and poverty mean anymore , excellently narrated which gave the story body, loved it completely.

Secret Child by Gordon Lewis (with Andrew Crofts through its narration by Kevin Hely )is a book that brings to life in cinematic description the real Dublin, Ireland and World of 1950s -1960’s. “Man’s inhumanity to man” may be the famous quote yet Gordon Lewis’s tale told through the eyes of the child narrator sees the humanity of Frank Duff’s dream. Gordon remembers the best in all the characters he met, just as all children have the magical ability to. We have so much to learn from this author and producer through his warm story. Reminiscent of “Philomena” with the same grace of looking back kindly on our past, remembering kindness, love and what brings us home.

A Powerful Positive True Story
