About this listen
In this episode I have a long overdue catch up with one of my old mates from film school, director Phil Claydon.
Phil Claydon is best known for directing the 2009 film Lesbian Vampire Killers, but he's so much more than that! His passion and excitement for film really shines through, and he was the one at film school who everyone knew was going to make it – he’s also the only one from our year who graduated with a First.
I’m not jealous!
In this revealing interview, we talk about our time in film school, and how Phil actually blagged his way into film school after being rejected multiple times. It’s a lesson for anyone on persistence in following your dreams.
Phil talks about how he managed to get his film projects off the ground, and the hard work involved in making each project a reality.
Phil talks about directing James Corden (The Late Late Show with James Corden, Into The Woods, Trolls, Cats) and what it was like working with James. Phil also discloses how he feels when James Corden hates down on the film Lesbian Vampire Killers whenever it’s mentioned on the Sky One show A League of Their Own.
We hear how Corden’s co-star Mathew Horne (Gavin & Stacey, Planet 51, Robin Hood) won the role in the film with some help from Gavin & Stacey co-writer Ruth Jones, and how Phil had to play peacemaker between James Corden and Paul McGann (Doctor Who, Alien 3, Withnail & I) on the set of Lesbian Vampire Killers.
Phil talks about his first film, Alone, and how he, as a 24-year-old director, felt working with the legendary actress Miriam Margolyes (Harry Potter, Babe, Romeo + Juliet). We hear about creative differences with the film’s soundtrack that led to Rick Wakeman’s soundtrack being replaced, and the awkward conversation required to do that.
For anyone interested in films, fimmaking or how you get a project off the ground, this is a ‘must listen to’ podcast.
