Summary

Contains books one and two of Legend of Tal, a sword-and-sorcery, coming-of-age adventure.

A King's Bargain, book one

The legend of Tal Harrenfel is sung across the Westreach, and with each telling, the tales grow taller.

Though he's declared a hero by his king, Tal has never claimed to be more than a man. After three decades of fighting warlocks, killing mythical beasts, and hunting enchanted treasure, Tal has had enough. Running from the deeds of his past, he retreats to his home village under a different name and meets an unlikely companion: Garin, a village boy who dreams of making a name for himself and seeing the world beyond their sleepy town.

When Tal receives a mysterious visitor, both he and Garin find themselves thrown into a sojourn across the kingdom. Soon, they become embroiled in the plots of monarchs, on the frontlines of an ancient war, and at the mercy of a fabled sorcerer. Now Tal must live up to his legend, and Garin must discover his own power, to survive the forces pitted against them.

A Queen's Command, book two

The legend of Tal Harrenfel lives on, and a new song spreads across the Westreach.

Though Tal and Garin overcame one enemy, victory promises to be short-lived. Garin struggles with his inner demons. Tal is haunted by enemies and memories alike. And a long-kept secret has torn a rift between them.

But circumstances force them to continue their travels together. The roads from Avendor to Gladelyl, once the safest in the Westreach, are rife with danger. And Tal is bound to the commands of the Elf Queen whose intentions are unforeseeable. But reaching the elven realm is only the beginning of their troubles, for Gladelyl is in turmoil. The nobles grasp for power. The underclass and Eastern immigrants seek new rights. And an ancient enemy takes advantage of the chaos to turn them all against each other. Now Garin must come to terms with his demons.

Hard as it must be for any fantasy writer, to not plagiarise Tolkien, this book should have themes familiar to any Hobbit.
That said, it's still a good story, and one I will continue with purchasing the next volume.
Oh, I nearly forgot, the narration is tip top.

Decent although derivative

Like others have said, this is much better than book 1. It’s got me wanting to read the next instalment.
Great characters, although I want to slap Garin. He’s so annoying. I am intrigued to what will happen with him though.
Over all, if you like fantasy, magical creatures, elves, dragons, and demons, this is for you.

Much Better Than The First

After reading some remarks both good and bad I had to dive into the story myself. After finishing the first book I can say that i really like the performance of narrator - kept me focussed on the characters and give them some extra dimension. Overal i liked the story and will continue listening to it - yes I read better fantasy with stronger story lines and better character building. But for me the story and characters worked nicely. If you’re up for some easy fantasy entertaining nicely told then this will not disappoint.

Very entertaining

I needed well written, exciting Fantasy, with interesting Characters and a world I wish I could visit.
I received exactly this.

Exactly what I needed.

The typical and standard story of a boy going on an adventure with a mentor with a mysterious past. Some of the characters felt grating and aggravating and only seemed redeemable from the fact they performed great deeds or were considered a friend to Tal or Gari, I don't know if it was in however partly due to the voices the narrator used, that they seemed flat/lifeless Tal self depreciation could get tiresome after some time. Garin was understandably a coward at times but it seemed for most of the story to be his main character trait which certainly put me off his character he did however have some moments of courage which helped. I may seem over critical but I did enjoy the story and will be listening to the 3rd book and possibly pre-ordering the 4th.

Good if somewhat predictable
