About this listen

Read by Samuel West, known for his roles in Van Helsing and Notting Hill.

Last Bus to Woodstock is the novel that began Colin Dexter's phenomenally successful Inspector Morse series.

'Do you think I'm wasting your time, Lewis?'
Lewis was nobody's fool and was a man of some honesty and integrity.
'Yes, sir.'
An engaging smile crept across Morse's mouth. He thought they could get on well together . . .

The death of Sylvia Kaye figured dramatically in Thursday afternoon's edition of the Oxford Mail. By Friday evening Inspector Morse had informed the nation that the police were looking for a dangerous man – facing charges of wilful murder, sexual assault and rape.

But as the obvious leads fade into twilight and darkness, Morse becomes more and more convinced that passion holds the key . . .

Last Bus to Woodstock is followed by the second Inspector Morse book, Last Seen Wearing.

At last I’ve found a series I can listen to. Sam West is a tremendous reader and makes listening a delight.
Whilst Colin Dexter’s writing hasn’t aged well societally, the plot twists stand the test of time.
As a Morse, Lewis and especially Endeavour fan, I relished listening and visualising the story. Reserved for night time, episodes segued in to the day so I’m now already into the second book. This is going to get expensive!

Beautifully read

Excellent Listen.

It’s dated but well narrated, the characters beginning g to form. No doubt the tv series add to the inner vision. I’m looking forward to working my way through the series.

A good listen

OK, Morse is not a 21st century New Man, he's a 20th century dinosaur - but I don't read woke entertainment, so I don't care (I like The Sweeny too)! John Thaw and Kevin Whately did such a good job of presenting them on the TV that it is always tempting when someone else portrays them to say "Oh, no, that's wrong!" - but this is the original book and is definitively correct. It's a long time since I saw Last Bus to Woodstock on TV, so the story was new to me and I enjoyed it very much. Samuel West is an experienced actor with a good track record and his narration is easy to listen to. The storyline is, as always, complex and it took me a long time to work out whodunit.

I'm now working my way through the rest of the Morse series on Audible - and trying hard to forget the John Thaw version at least for the time it takes me to hear each of them.

The definitive detective.
