About this listen

The death of history teacher Craig Foster devastated his young wife, who'd sent him off to work that morning with a lovingly packed lunch. It shocked his colleagues at the Upper West Side private school. And as for the 10-year-old girls who found him in his classroom in a pool of bodily fluids, they may have been traumatized for life.

Lieutenant Eve Dallas, of course, is more hardened to murder cases. And this is clearly a murder case. That lovingly packed lunch was tainted with deadly ricin. And Mr. Foster's colleagues, shocked as they may be, have some shocking secrets of their own. It's Eve's job to get a feel for all the potential suspects, and find out why someone would have done this to a man who seemed so inoffensive, so pleasant...so innocent.

Now Magdelana Percell - there's someone Eve can picture as a murder victim. Possibly at Eve's own hands. The slinky blonde - an old flame of her billionaire husband, Roarke, from his days on the wrong side of the law - has turned up in New York, and she's anything but innocent.

Unfortunately, Roarke seems blind to Magdelana's manipulation, but not to her shapely figure and flirtatious ways. And he insists that the occasional lunch or business meeting with her is nothing to worry about...and none of Eve's business.

Eve's so unnerved by the situation that she finds it hard to focus on the Foster case. Still, she'll have to put aside her anger, jealousy, and heartbreak, for a while at least - because another man has just turned up dead, and the case is taking some strange turns and hitting some frustrating dead ends.

Eve knows all too well that innocence can be a façade. Keeping that in mind may help her solve this case at last. But it may also tear apart her marriage.

Critic reviews

"Once again Lt. Eve Dallas shows why she's 'New York City's top murder cop' in [Nora] Roberts's 24th thriller under her Robb pseudonym set half a century into the future." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Susan Ericksen...delivers powerful secondary characters of both genders and varying ages." ( AudioFile)

I love the way the audio reading brings the characters to life. This series is highly recommended.

Great series of books

This book is an emotional hurricane that batters you from every side and will leave you shocked and dazed.
Not only are the murders hideous and haunting, but Roarke is also struggling to see what is plainly in front of his face, what is so obvious to both Eve and Somerset, and this challenges Eve and her concentration on her work.
Whilst Eve and Roarke have disagreed in the past and found themselves on opposite sides of an opinion or situation they have always talked, argued and fought it out, for the first time, there is a distance that is only growing with every hour and Maggie has managed to slide into that gap.
My heart hurts for Eve as she struggles to understand the roiling emotions and frustration she is feeling and still concentrate on the cold blooded murders happening in front of her. For the first time ever I was disappointed in Roarke in this book.
I listened to this on Audible.

This case will haunt me for months

Susan Erikson gives another brilliant performance in this gripping story, full if intrigue, surprises and twists right up to the end.

Another great story by JD Robb!

AUDIBLE REVIEW 23
So much sadder listening to this but I absolutely loved Eve’s playing of the killer and the whole Magdelana situation. Eve’s dealing with the situation at the end after being so messed up earlier was fabulous.
BOOK REVIEW
Eve is forced to prove who the killer is to all her colleagues as no one agrees with her findings.
For all that the element of this particular killer in this book is unbelievable, this is one of my favourites due to the appearance of Magdelana, an old and special flame of Roark’s.
The hiccup this puts in Eve and Roark’s relationship is truly one of my favourite reads. Even Summerset has a say. The ending especially has Eve’s particular brand of finesse to it.
The deaths of both Foster and Trevor are terribly sad.
I own every book in this series and I love rereading them, it is my go to for some relaxation.

So much sadder listening to this.

This book is number 24 in the "in death" series, but it is the first one that I have read/listened to. The main protagonist is New York cop Eve Dallas and she sets about trying to solve the apparently motiveless killing of an elementary school teacher. What I hadn't realised from the blurb is that story is set about 50 years in the future - this only dawned on me some time into the story! The plot itself was OK, and there are some nice twists and turns in the story, but for me it was spoilt by the totally incredible (in the literal sense) identity of the sociopathic serial killer!

The narrator for the most part does a great job, the only exception being her Irish accent. Unfortunately, one of the main characters is Irish! Obviously, this is my personal opinion, and this series (including this book) get 4*-plus reviews on the US site, so don't let this one review put you off - I'm tempted to give the series another go, but this one was just a little to implausible for me.

Not terribly plausible!
