About this listen

The world is burning. Rume is under attack. The Autumn Lords, rulers of the Tchinee Empire, have had their true nature revealed. The Emperor descends into madness. And Fisk and Shoe - unlikely heroes, very likely mercenaries - must find their way to Fisk's wife and child, whom he has never seen.

There might be quite a lot in their way. A war, for one thing. But Livia is as determined as Fisk to be reunited. And Shoe may have a plan....

Steven Pacey tremendous as always. Story dragged in the middle and was rushed at the end. Great world building and interesting character perspectives but strayed a little too far from the mix of genres so perfect in the Incorruptibles.

Okay ending to a fantastic start

I listened to this audiobook for two reasons; one, it was read by Stephen Pacey and two, it was fantasy.

Stephen did not disappoint.

The story, hmmmmm! Really not sure about basing the story on the Roman Empire - and I mean REALLY basing it on Rome!!

I felt very confused by Viteer, Stretchers, dragons and Dvergar! (Apologies for spelling, I only listened remember.)

Ending was soooooo rushed and not enough was explained. I was also fed up with some of the characters’ development - Fisk became an also-ran, Carnelia was just wet (sissy!!!!!) and Fiskalia (the baby) seemed to be a baby one minute and a toddler the next!

Not the worst trilogy I’ve read, by any means, but could have been better - Stephen saved the day!

Hmmmm

The last book of series has a good wrap up of the characters but I still can’t figure out the Shoestring POV, or what his purpose was to the story (except to retell it).
Nevertheless, amazing performance by Steven Pacey! Always love his work.
And I don’t know why, but this audio book was a lot less loud then the rest of Audible books. I had to turn off the headphone safety mode to hear at all.

Good enough end.
