Summary

During World War II, an American soldier encounters a German woman living a secret life in bomb-blighted London.

In September of 1940, during the Blitz in London, Audrey Stocking is blending in with other civilians who are trying to survive the nightly bombings, but she has a secret. She’s not British; she’s German. Her fake passport and nearly perfect English allow her to blend in as she works hard to help evacuate British children into the countryside. Audrey longs to reunite with her family in Hamburg, but her double life, the bombings, and the watchful British Military Intelligence have forced her to stay put. And then there are the paralyzing nightmares....

Lieutenant Wesley Bowers, an American soldier training with London’s Bomb Disposal Company 5, meets Audrey when an air raid leaves an unexploded bomb on the floor of her flat. She is attractive, intelligent, and compassionate, and there’s an immediate connection between them. As they get to know each other, Wesley realizes Audrey is the one bright spot amid the war’s unending bleakness and constant threat of death. But will he still feel the same if he discovers the secrets she is hiding? Secrets even Audrey is unaware of?

In Times of Rain and War is a gripping and heartbreakingly beautiful story about the strength and resilience of the human heart and spirit, reminding us there is always hope in hard times.

interesting view point

I liked the fact that the love interests were minimal there was far more than that to the story.

Moving without being cloying. Tense without bein-w

Read by one of my favourite narrators, this tale takes you on a gentle emotional rollercoaster, like a local fairground rather than a big theme park, a familiar tale of love in war and hope, yet at the same time, fresh and unpredictable.

Friendship forms in unlikely places. Love, like flowers in the remains of bombed out buildings, can survive death and destruction. Hope can eventually shine through in the darkest of times, these are the messages of In Times of Rain and War

I was immersed.

I loved this book. I enjoy books about WW2 and this book was different from others I have read. The narration was excellent, I felt all the characters come to life and their personalities shone through. I also enjoyed that the story didn’t finish at the end of the war but it had a completeness about it. The obvious research and attention to detail made it all the more compelling. I shall look for more by this author.

A story of love, loss and survival

What a wonderfully descriptive book. I was fully engaged with the characters from the very beginning. It was both uplifting and heartbreaking and the narrator brought the characters to life for me. The fact I’m mourning the characters is proof positive of how much involved in their lives I became.

I would highly recommend this

Enjoyable but written for Americans

Whilst I don’t doubt or question the authors research on this book, the constant references to ‘sidewalks’ and ‘scooting’ were so jarring that maybe they should rethink the thanks to their editor who missed a lot.
