  • Summary

  • We advise listeners that this podcast contains strong language, adult themes and content that some people may find triggering. Listener discretion is advised.

In this unflinchingly honest documentary and memoir, comedian Josh Thomas asks the big question: how do I be gay? Irreverent but informative, Josh Thomas speaks to a party of hilarious and experienced queer storytellers as they share true tales and advice on how to be gay.

When I was a teenager trying to work out how to be gay I would ask google impossible questions. 'Am I gay?' 'How can I test if I’m gay?' 'If I’m gay do I have to do anal?' It didn’t work. Google is a cool place to go to ask questions that have answers, like 'Where can I get an iced oat latte?' But it isn’t a good place to go to look within. Now, I am a grown, fully-qualified homosexual and I am talking to other fully-qualified queers to answer the questions Google couldn’t.

Featuring: David Sedaris, Tig Notaro, Dan Savage, Tony Kushner, Titus Burgess, Joel Kim Booster, Katja Blichfeld, Cole Escole, Dewayne Perkins and Josh Thomas’ Mum.

After making his mark as an award-winning and hugely-successful stand-up comedian, Josh Thomas turned his hand to writing, acting and co-executive producing his own television show, inspired by his life and his comedy, Please Like Me. Josh is now based in LA where he has created and stars in Everything’s Gonna Be Okay.

Unexpectedly thought provoking

I was not expecting such in depth and sometimes difficult to listen to episodes. I think the balance between Josh’s experiences and his collaborators was very effective. Excellent!

loved this!

I love Please Like Me and Josh's style generally. So I felt this series really worked - his informality, him chuckling along, dogs barking etc. Would definitely listen to a second series. PS And I found his friend Courtney so funny in ep 9 ('mediocre egg' 'dip dip swirl' etc).

Did not expect this podcast to be this well thought-out

Really enjoyed the discourse about Ancient Babylon. This podcast is basically an introduction to Gayness in general to either a young person questioning or coming to terms with their identity, or an ally wanting to educate themselves. To be fair, Josh Thomas never disappoints.

Very relatable

Listening to Josh talk about how much he struggled to figure things out about his sexuality was really identifiable, honestly what struck me more was that it took him so long to realise he was autistic. Everyone else going,"oh yeah, I knew" and him going "I didn't have a clue", as an autistic queer person mirrored my experience hugely.

Interesting guests and subjects

The subject matter of many of the interviews sparked interest for me but I didn't care for the host. I often wished that the host would step back a little more and focus on the experiences that the guests were talking about. Having listened to all of the episodes currently available, I don't regret listening, but I don't feel motivated to recommend it the way I do with other content. I can say this podcast made me want to learn more about several of the people who shared their stories throughout the episodes.

Surprisingly excellent

I expected this to be a fun, light listen, but was pleasantly surprised both by the depth the podcast goes into, but by Josh Thomas's interview as well. He is very attentive and you can tell he's really listening to the people he's interviewing, and by looking into what he really finds interesting, makes the podcast interesting for us as well. There is also a good balance of empathy and humor, interviewing celebrities, non celebrities who have relevant eperience, and people from his own life.

Truly inspired work

I used to do this for a living and it doesn’t just “happen” say, as on thinks of having a baby, which is equally complex and mysterious.
Can’t say enough about the mastery in which the entire podcast comes together, including superb orchestration.
Give me more mister Thomas! I must have more!

Like...like...like...like....

Like -- every third word is 'like' -- please just be straightforward and talk about yourselves and your experiences WITHOUT using that stupid filler word constantly in every single sentence!

So Fun

Fun podcast. It makes you think about different perspectives of gays through time and gender. I loved hearing the different stories.

Great series!

I love Josh Thomas’ work. Please Like Me and Everything’s Going to Be Ok were really good shows and fun explorations of various portions of his real life. This series is a continuation of that spirit and his conversations with other queer folks about their experiences was refreshing. I heartily recommend it!

Relatable and funny

Josh is so down to earth and honest about his life and I find that so engaging. I learned a lot too being a straight female over 50 with 3 grown children - I get him and I adore his ability to laugh at himself and his experiences. I loved Everything’s Gonna be Okay as well.
