Story
Relative Love is a heart-rending story of loss and love, covering one year in the lives of the Harrison family, a sprawling clan doing their best to hold together in the face of a changing world. The story opens as the Harrisons gather for Christmas at their big country house. But when tragedy strikes, of the most unforeseeable and devastating kind, they are torn apart. Harsh truths emerge, about the past as well as the present, laying bare the fragility of their happiness and all that they have taken for granted.

Story
She seemed to have it all: children, a handsome husband, and a trust fund. But in the early 1950s, Nica Rotschild heard "Round Midnight" by the jazz legend Thelonious Monk; the music overtook her like a magic spell, and she abandoned her marriage to go and find him. She was shunned by society but the musicians gave her friendship. She gave them material and emotional support. Her convertible Bentley was a familiar sight outside the clubs; her notoriety was sealed when Charlie Parker died in her apartment. But her real love was reserved for Monk, whom she cared for until his death in 1982.

Queens governess

Summary
Bloomsbury presents House of Trelawney by Hannah Rothschild, read by Elaine Claxton.
The seat of the Trelawney family for over 800 years, Trelawney Castle was once the jewel of the Cornish coast. Each successive Earl spent with abandon, turning the house and grounds into a sprawling, extravagant palimpsest of wings, turrets and follies.
But recent generations have been better at spending than making money. Now living in isolated penury, unable to communicate with each other or the rest of the world, the family are running out of options. Three unexpected events will hasten their demise: the sudden appearance of a new relation, an illegitimate, headstrong, beautiful girl; an unscrupulous American hedge fund manager determined to exact revenge; and the crash of 2008.
A love story and social satire set in the parallel and seemingly unconnected worlds of the British aristocracy and high finance, House of Trelawney is also the story of lost and found friendships between three women. One of them will die; another will discover her vocation; and the third will find love.
Critic reviews
"Curl up and lose yourself in this hugely entertaining satire of a deeply dysfunctional family of aristocrats desperate to save their crumbling Cornwall home" (I Paper)
"If you’re in need of a Succession replacement then this tale of a crumbling English dynasty clinging on to the past while coping with the fallout of the 2008 crash is for you. Rothschild is a mischievous narrator and this story is pure pleasure from the word go." (Stylist)

Totally clichéd
I think this book was reviewed and recommended in a magazine when I was looking for a new read. The story is a total cliché with totally clichéd characters. If that is what you like then you will probably enjoy this book. Very disappointing.

Cringeworthy
I bought this because I’d read a good review but I really thought it wasn’t very good. The author makes a hash of basic background facts to the story. A good editor would have sent her back for more research or to consult an expert. It was so preposterous in parts that I got close to the end but couldn’t beard any more. A pity, as a rewrite could have been good.

A great story
I have loved all of Hannah Rothschild's books and this was a great addition to her back catalogue.
Packed full of wonderful characters, some lovely, some ghastly, this was an amusing and entertaining tale of the demise of an ancient aristocratic Cornish family. Set in 2008 at the height of the global financial crash, the author has woven a tale of greed, revenge, social snobbery, romance, misunderstandings, double-dealing and the power of art. It is a fantastically engaging book, which made me laugh out loud at times, wince with embarrassment at other times and hope against hope for the redemption of some of the characters.
A really great read.
