Story
It’s been five years since the end of the Hive Wars. Straker has handed over the burden of governing the Earthan Republic to civil authorities. This should be a happy time, as Straker and his most loyal soldiers retire to a planet and step off the galactic stage. Unfortunately, authoritarian forces within the Earthan Republic are still simmering with rage at his victory. Rumors reach Straker of a growing new Republic Fleet manned by state loyalists. Planets begin to fall under their influence and go dark. Even in retirement, they see Straker’s Breakers as a threat.

Story
The year is 2650. Seventy-five years ago, an alien fleet attacked Earth. Without warning. Without mercy. We were not prepared. Hundreds of millions perished. Dozens of cities burned. We nearly lost everything. Then the aliens abruptly left. We rebuilt. We armed ourselves. We swore: never again. But the aliens never came back. Until now. With overwhelming force the aliens have returned, striking deep into our territory, sending Earth into a panic.

Story
After centuries in stasis, a lost task force returns home. Arriving from the infinite void the surviving ships discover that the Imperium lies in ruin. The Homeworld itself is destroyed, and nothing lives in the Ancestral System except an infestation of unknown bipedal beings - creatures soft, red of blood and warm of flesh.... When you colonize a planet, make sure the owners aren't coming back.... MECH is the story of a new Earth colony built upon the ancient Homeworld of a civilization presumed (incorrectly) to be long dead.

In the twentieth century Earth sent probes, transmissions and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy.

From Hugo and Dragon Award finalist David VanDyke, and science fiction legend and Dragon finalist B.V. Larson, comes book four in the epic military space opera adventure saga!
The Republic, the Opters, and a strange Crystalline race of unknown origin all meet in a series of titanic battles. Commodore Straker summons thousands of ships, but he soon learns he’s technologically outclassed by the enemy.
With traditional victory impossible, the race is on for each side to destroy the key worlds of the other. Billions die, entire planets are destroyed.
Even while the war rages, dark suspicions grow. There are traitors in the midst of the chaos. Straker realizes the worst enemy is the one you believed to be your ally....
Hive War is a thrilling tale of warfare and adventure among the stars. This is the fourth book in the Galactic Liberation series. Look for book 1, Starship Liberator if you’re new to this expanding universe.

It's Okay, but
Mark Boyett does a great job narrating!
However, I don't understand Larson/VanDyke's obsession with dropping the protagonist into a 'backward' world for seemingly the sole purpose of getting laid (by cheating on his wife). Despite the authors' pronouncement that the activity is necessary to the story it is not. That entire section of the book was a waste of time.

A perfect ending?
Some stories don't know when to quit. The business model seems to be: (write a book, find it's successful and then milk that bitch for as long as one can); and they do. This is a double edged sword as it obviously finds an audience but then it abuses it until almost the point of utter exhaustion. This series did not. It delivered four powerful novels that actually delivered what could be interpreted as a conclusive end. It was a wonderful story with action, passion, massive battles, early struggles, a strong male hero, female hero, a squid hero ... Artificial Intelligence, Evil Bugs (then good), Evil Crystals ... sword fights, extra martial affairs (of necessity - a stallion must roam) it was great...and instead of using psycho VIC as the foil, for another novel, in another never ending series...they destroyed him utterly. Bravo.

A Masterpiece!
Larson and VanDyke outdid themselves on this one! The only thing I had trouble swallowing was the nature of the crystalline entities. But the A.I., Victory, was an immensely satisfying villain! You would think that “beings” such as Capt. Victory and the monster from another story called the Terminator would cause our scientists and military leaders to put a halt to all development of artificial intelligence, but there will always be some idiot(s) who will rationalize its value to humanity. Which could turn out to be our downfall.
But kudos to the authors and to Mark Boyett for a magnificent and unforgettable military sci-fi epic tale!

Among the best in the series
This installment is among the best in the series. It includes the same kind of imaginative high-tech including crystals which are alive and tap artificial black holes for virtually unlimited energy as well as medieval battles with ancient weapons. It includes the pathos of the Liberator and his family, along with massive fleets where literally tens of thousands of ships are destroyed. It includes the cross-cultural relationships and conflicts between humans, artificial intelligences and other organic species. A good read!
