Excellent guide for creative writers

Very comprehensive and practical advice for anyone who wants to write creatively. It covers wide ranging topics from how to create character to how to write realistic dialogue, from how to begin a story to details of how to get published, from genre writing and suitable writing techniques. Very enjoyable easy read with personal and humorous touches that makes it feel like you are being given advice from a very knowledgeable friend (or 2 friends!)

Perfect for writers of all levels!

This book is perfect for beginners with lots of practical information many other books don't even brush on: how to start, finding the space to writing, finding the time and what you really need. Specifically how to start your writing journey/career if you're on a budget. The first book I've read that gives you this advice.

The first part of this book is how to write and the second part gives information about practical advice regarding formatting and markets. I recommend this book above all others for beginners and people who want to earn a living from writing. Most books spend a lot of time telling you how to write but not much on how to make a career. I've never read a book that told me about the right formatting and how to implement it on a word processor! This book even tells you about taxes!

Although I said it's for beginners I'm not really a beginner and straight away I learnt things from this book: After listening to the 'where do you get your ideas' bit I was inspired and had an idea of how to come at a story from a different angle. There's a section on dialogue and they mention using speech tags, saying that sometimes you don't need to use them at all.  And then: tips about backing up your work and how to use what you know to inspire your writing, making a note of what names you have used and titles not to overuse them in other future works.
There's something for writers of all levels in this book.

What makes this books stand out from all the others: it's written using the personal experience of the authors. It reads like a conversation between friends telling you how they write and how you can start and continue your writing career. Most books on writing take ages to read and they are how-to or report like books, but From Story Idea To Reader has no waffle and gets straight to the point with worthwhile knowledge others books don't give or only skim. This definitely deserves a place on any writers' bookshelf.

There's a lot of books about writing and it's hard to know which ones stand out and are going to teach you and which ones are just a regurgitation of every other book or give you a promise that could be fulfilled in a blog post rather than buying a whole book. I've read a few and own quite a few. This one stands out and has something for writers at every stage of this journey/career.

I'm going to have to get a physical copy of this book and reread it, I realised I prefer to read books rather than listen and whilst listening to it I didn't do the exercises at the end of each chapter. So excuse to get a copy!

A Budding Writer Writes....

I should start by saying that was given this free review copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
The book is written in the style of a dialogue between the two authors who are experienced, successful writers. Throughout the book they share with the reader/listener their considerable experience and knowledge of how to manage the whole process of becoming and remaining a successful, published writer. The book does this very comprehensively indeed e.g. there is a great section on the use of technology and the internet, which I hadn’t expected.
In terms of actual “writing” advice the book is equally comprehensive and includes many useful lists and exercises to get the writing juices going. Perhaps worth noting, though that long lists (as useful as they are) don’t easily lend themselves to the audiobook medium.
If you are considering writing for the short story magazine market you will, in my opinion, find this book indispensable. Budding male authors might find the many examples given to make a point a bit over weighted towards a female lifestyle and a womag orientation. However, this does not detract from the quality of the advice given throughout the book. It’s just a little hard to relate to the decidedly female focus when listening to the audiobook whilst shaving in front of the bathroom mirror early in the morning. And that, of course, is the purpose of the audiobook. You can listen to it whilst doing something else.
For me, it will be an excellent resource which I will absorb over time, not necessarily by listening from beginning to end, but by dipping into whilst I pursue the obligatory, often mundane, tasks in life.
Finally, and this is very important. The book is narrated by a soft spoken North American male who does a great job of engaging and retaining the interest of the listener.
Very professionally done.

A comprehensive writer's companion

Two experienced authors pool their collective knowledge and experience in this informative and engagingly written writer’s companion. The book provides a wealth of information, advice and calls to action for the budding or more experienced novelist or short story writer. It covers all aspects of writing, from how to generate ideas to where to place your finished work.

This is the first how-to audiobook I’ve tried, and I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to follow; I could sit back, give my eyes a rest and learn. If I wanted to go back over some specific points, I turned to the PDF that accompanies the audiobook. All in all, From Story Idea to Reader is a valuable addition to my collection of books on writing.
