Summary

These selected terrors range from the speculative to supernatural horror, encompass the infernal and the occult, and include stories inspired by H. P. Lovecraft, Robert Aickman, and Ramsey Campbell.

Hasty for the Dark is the second short story collection from the award-winning and widely appreciated British writer of horror fiction, Adam L. G. Nevill. The author's best horror stories from 2009 to 2015 are collected here for the first time.

The hardest journeys in life and death are taken underground.

No blackmail is as ghastly as extortion from angels.

A swift reckoning often travels in handheld luggage.

Once considered inhumane and now derelict, this zoo may not be as empty as assumed.

A bad marriage, a killer couple, and part of a wider movement.

No sign of life aboard an abandoned freighter, but what is left below deck tells a strange story.

The origin of our species is not what we think.

In destitution, the future for revolution and mass murder is so bright.

Your memories may not be your own, and your life nothing more than a ritual that will compel you to perform an atrocity….

Brilliant!

Contains one of my favourite short stories ever in Call the Name, which is a Lovecraftian masterpiece.

I just love Nevill's stuff.

they never end, or start, how I think they will. I wish audible's chapters had the names of the short stories so I could tell which ones I liked best, but they don't, so I can't, and you'll just have to listen to them all and enjoy them yourself.

Brilliant. Compelling and utterly terrifying.

A near-perfect collection of tales. I wasn't aware of Nevill's work (besides the film adaptation of 'The Ritual'), and bought this collection one late night on a whim for some disposable horror with a spare credit. A paragraph into the first story I was not only hooked I was genuinely scared. I had expected a semi-decent knock-off of Stephen King or Lovecraft, but instead any one of these stories could be slipped into one of Clive Barker's Books of Blood volumes and fit right in. Their visceral, sinister tone that works in perfect harmony with Nevill's almost casual prose, describing horrific imagery as though unphased by it, fits the Barker canon - but with Nevill's unique writing style. I cannot recommend this series enough.

The narration by the consistently-brilliant Peter Bishop only heightens the experience of these tales. As effective as they are in prose, I am grateful my first experience was with Bishop's narration. It is a shame Nevill's other collections are not granted this same courtesy.

10/10, perfect.

A hub for the strange and weird.

loved it and the narrator did an amazing job conveying the atmosphere of each story.

A brilliant collection of work.

Firstly, it's worth highlighting the variety of horrors within the collection. There are stories very reminiscent of Thomas Ligotti's nihilistic short fiction and others, too, more in tribute to Ramsey Campbell. The longest tale half-way through the collection is a brilliant piece of Lovecraftian horror and does very well to convey the same looming dread as HP does with his tales.

I found myself completing the book in a day whilst fishing and I was so happy with it in the end that I purchased another two of Neville's works; The Last Days and Some Will Not Sleep. Here's hoping that they live up to this one.
