Summary

This psychological thriller follows a family to their Appalachian farmhouse where they encounter an unimaginable horror.

In the summer of 1994, psychologist Daniel Hill buys a rustic farmhouse nestled in the rolling hills of West Virginia.

Along with his wife and teenage daughter, the family uproots their lives in Ohio and moves south. They are initially seduced by the natural beauty of the country setting. That soon changes when they discover a hidden room in the basement with a well, boarded shut and adorned with crucifixes.

Local legends about the previous owner being an exorcist come to light, but by then, all Hell has broken loose.

This 1990s horror novel is perfect for fans of family thriller books, stories of demonic possession, exorcism fiction, the occult, or thrillers like The Exorcist, A Head Full of Ghosts, and The Amityville Horror.

I knew how this was going to end but enjoyed the journey of it anyway. Good pacing, no waffling.

compelling and creepy!

it's the first book of Nick Roberts I've read but will definitely be checking out his others. I've read a lot of horror books and this one really had me hooked and audibly gasping in places. Really enjoyed it!

A brilliant horror story!

Had me gripped from the start.
Yes it follows the pathway of many before it, but the story is told with a certain slickness.
The characters are full bodied and you are genuinely interested in them.
The narrator was outstanding with an incredible range of voices pitched perfectly to each character.
Definitely worth a listen..

OK, but nothing new

I was disappointed to find a horror story which could have been written half a century ago. There was nothing new or imaginative when it came to the supernatural element of the story. It was based on very traditional, orthodox Catholic dogma. Satan, devils, exorcism, crucifixes, magic water, etc. I was looking for something unique and interesting. So the best compliment I can give the story is that it was written well. But the meat of it was pretty stale. Could have been written sixty years ago, and it would have been filled the same horror tropes.

Very nice! Pleasently surprised.

The narrator was beyond magnificent, and the story good although two details were illogical. These details had no significant bearing on the main story however. They just pulled me out of the immersion. Otherwise the author does a great job of presenting believable characters in a short manner.
