The only magic Emma Hart believes in is caffeine and the power of the dryer to lose one sock per load. A public interest lawyer buried under a mound of student debt, Emma's whole life has been one turn of bad luck after another. Her streak seems to continue when she gets lost on the way to see a client in the remote Pocono Mountains. A chance encounter with a suicidal angel lands her in Spellbound, a town where supernaturals have been cursed to remain for centuries - probably not the best time for Emma to discover that she's actually a witch.

"Happily Ever After" wasn't supposed to come with a do-over option. But when my husband of 20 years packs up and heads for greener pastures, and my son heads away to college, that's exactly what my midlife becomes. A do-over. This time, though, I plan to do things differently. Age is just a number, after all, and at 40 I'm ready to carve my own path. Eager for a fresh start, I make a somewhat unorthodox decision and move to a tiny town in the Sierra foothills.

One day, I’m married, living in Seattle, and magic isn’t real. The next, I’m divorced and living in the guest room of my ex’s hotter-than-sin cousin’s place in Savannah and talking to an animated skeleton named Robert. I have to admit, Robert isn’t my worst date. At 41, I didn’t think I’d be starting over. But I’ll be damned if my ex thinks I’m down and out because he pulled a fast one on me. When a job comes my way that offers me a chance to use my childhood training in the shadow world, I take it.

They need a plan, so they look to Mystic Bayou, a tiny town hidden in the swamp where humans and supernatural residents have been living in harmony for generations.

It was a day like any other day for Marina Trahan...until she caught her husband in bed with another woman. Before that eye-opening wake-up call, Marina would have described her life as average or uneventful, maybe even boring. But now, chaos and confusion reign supreme. She’d expected to slide through midlife with her unwanted extra pounds, chin hair, and hot flashes and move somewhat gracefully into elastic-waist pants and having no verbal filter.

Story
When I arrived at my uncle's house, I expected my relatives to be like me - outcast sorcerers who don't practice magic. I was right about the sorcery, but wrong about everything else. Rule two: Don't listen to the demon. My uncle chose a far deadlier power. He calls creatures of darkness into our world, binds them into service contracts, and sells them to the highest bidder. And I'm supposed to act like I don't know how illegal and dangerous it is. Rule three: Don't talk to the demon. All I had to do was keep my nose out of it.

Summary
Welcome to Chipping Cheddar, where supernaturals are hidden in plain sight....
Annoying but loving family? Check.
Picturesque small town with a hot police chief? Check.
A rescue hellhound, a black cat with attitude, and a pet python that thinks he’s a puppy? Triple check.
My story has all the hallmarks of a sweet and cozy supernatural tale, but there’s a twist - I am evil.
Well, I’m supposed to be evil thanks to both nature and nurture, but I fight it with every fiber of my being. I just want to live a normal life. I even joined the FBI instead of the Federal Bureau of Magic, until my powers reared their ugly head and the agency sent me packing back to my hometown to fight magical crimes instead.
Now I’m back in Chipping Cheddar, living with my evil family, with a new job and all my old baggage.
Oh, and there’s a dead body, which was definitely not an accident.
So there you have it. Welcome to my world.
Great Balls of Fury is the first book in the Federal Bureau of Magic paranormal cozy mystery series.
Other books in the series include:
- Fury Godmother, Book 2
- No Guts, No Fury, Book 3

Sigh...
So, while the storyline wasn’t bad, it is really disappointing to hear words misused and mispronounced. It negatively impacts my enjoyment of the story. Not have read the printed version, I do not know if it was the author’s mistake or the reader’s, but it is enough to keep me from pursuing more stories in the series.

Mispronunciations were distracting.
The narrator mispronounced several words repeatedly throughout the book. Once or twice is distracting, but hearing the same words constantly mispronounced gets annoying enough to pull you out of the book. The worst was her pronunciation of “corporeal” as “corporal”.

More cozy than thriller
Eden Fury is a former FBI agent who was masquerading as a human. She is half demon and half fury. she worked for the FBI until she made the mistake of biting her partner. She temporarily turned into a vampire when she siphoned power from a vampire suspect; siphoning power is a witchy trait. Upon being discovered to have magical abilities she was transferred to the FBM (Federal Bureau of Magic). FBM investigates crimes of the magical or supernatural nature in the human world. Coincidentally, the opening for an FBM agent is in her hometown Chipping Cheddar. That is right where she did not want to be. Her father is a vengeance demon and her mother a witch. The family believes in being in touch with their dark side. That is why Eden left the family for the normal world. She does not want to embrace the inherent darkness of the fury demon. Being mixed blood, she acquires powers over time when she demonstrates her aptitude for bad deeds. We never discover what powers she has except that she did receive wings after the vampire incident. In addition, Eden is a woman who loves to be in the mist of action and action does not happen in Chipping Cheddar. Her cover story is she has been transferred to the cyber division of the FBI in Chipping Cheddar. Her family is hilarious. Her parents are divorced and live next to each other. Her father remarried a vampire. Her mother, grandmother, and great-aunt live together. Her brother, sister-in-law, niece and nephew are temporarily staying with her mother. Her family has a penchant for wickedness which teeters on the edge of what is acceptable. Her grandmother is cantankerous and her great-aunt kind and loving. The family is constantly throwing barbs and snide remarks at each other. Her grandmother is cantankerous and her great-aunt kind and loving. The family is constantly throwing barbs and snide remarks at each other. Eden is thrown into all this madness and turbulent relationships (renewing her best friend relationship, and her animosity with her high school rival) and she must essentially work undercover. Therefore, when a murder happens, she is anxious to be in the thick of investigating but others sees her as an IT person. Fortunately for her there is a new Chief of Police who respects her past work with the FBI. Furies mete out justice to evil doers. Eden feels the fury justice is overzealous. Fury justice seems not to be able to distinguish between the degree of the crime/transgression. She therefore, avoids succumbing to her fury side. I did not rate this a five because I was disappointed that nothing “fury magic” happened. I would like to see her grow into her powers and learn how to use them. I will try the second book to see if she will began to use her fury magic

Addams Family Vibes, Feigned Fury, Good Cozy Start
Eden Fury through a misstep on a call while an FBI agent had her non-human ancestry discovered and is transferred to FBM (Federal Bureau of Magic) and transferred back in her home of Chipping Cheddar that she swore she would never return to. This story has all the flavors of coming back to the small town with all the relationships you left behind with an added bonus of a supernatural mostly evil family that is funny and quirky and gives you the Addams Family vibe. There is lots of humor and early beginnings to a community, possible romance, and lots of familial, foe, and friendly relationships that I look forward to seeing expanded. I unlike some mentions from other reviewers did not notice mispronunciations and really enjoyed the narrator and her great spectrum of accents for characters that made them come to life. I do however listen to my cozies at 1.5x speed. Also worth mentioning I am starting this series because I have listened to all of Annabel Chase's other series called Spellbound which is also a fun supernatural cozy but feels more YA than this one. I will say Eden also is similar to the trope of Vegan Vampire who doesn't want to drink blood or be bad. Eden is a Fury who doesn't use her power or express it, in fact disdains it, which means as an audience this is an area we don't get to explore. This extends to her other family members, we don't really see or get to know what they all can do or do do for their jobs. I truly hope this is developed in future volumes. I love the humor in the stories and found myself chuckling out loud several times even in moments you could see the joke coming. This is a lovely light read with a promising set up and plenty of room to expand. I will be continuing in the series.

Great Fun!!!!!
This book was really funny good world and character building with some magic. I look forward to the next book and the narrator is great. She has a good voice for female and male characters which for me is essential. Half the fun of audio books is the narrators ability to bring the story to life. Highly recommend LMM
