About this listen

Cass Neary made her name in the 70s as a photographer embedded in the burgeoning punk movement in New York City. Her pictures of the musicians and the hangers-on, the infamous, the damned, and the dead, earned her a brief moment of fame.

Thirty years later she is adrift, on her way down and almost out when an old acquaintance sends her on a mercy gig to interview a famously reclusive photographer who lives on an island in Maine. When she arrives Down East, Cass stumbles across a decades-old mystery that is still claiming victims, and she finds one final shot at redemption.

I had to warm up to the speaker as well as the story. But it’s well worth it. I am looking forward to hear more!

Enjoy the darkness

A bit overstated and simple for my liking. But it definitely works as a distraction when doing boring chores. And that was what I needed it for.

An okay read when you need to take your mind if the task at hand

Cass Neary is definitely your typical antihero, yet you are still drawn to her. She knows exactly how she made a mess of her life, yet still carries on doing exactly the same thing for 30 years. Beautifully written, with velvety description of the stark Maine scenery. A darkly layered thriller. Highly recommended , but perhaps not for the feint at heart!

Darkly exquisite

Ok, so now I find myself bingeing Elizabeth Hand’s Cass Neary novels. There’s something about this Amazonian pill-popping, punk photographer who fearlessly batters her way through dark death-laden storylines with an almost sociopathic approach to crime fighting.

The stories dip and arc and weave about but they’re never dull.

Cass is the kind of woman you’d love to know but she’d scare you witless by lunchtime. Can’t help but love her though. Next!

I’m addicted now!
