About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

With an introduction written and read by Katie Fforde.

Hero Wantage is desperate to change her fate.

When the dashing Lord Sherry proposes out of the blue, Hero is overjoyed—she'll escape a life as a governess and, once they wed, he can finally claim his inheritance.

But as Hero attempts to social climb in glamorous London society, Sherry is concerned that her naivety will ruin them both and takes drastic action.

The chaos that follows will push friendships—and hearts—to breaking point.

I love this novel, the main characters are engaging, the supporting characters are wonderful funny and sweet, the writing is superb. Sadly, although this narrator, I'm sure, does his best, his diction is poor - gabbling, mispronouncing, and generally swallowing his words - so that if I hadn't known the story inside out I would have had difficulty following the plot in places. Penguin should have hired someone of the caibre of Cornelius Garret or Richard Armitage to read it.

my favourite Heyer

Good story. Narrator is excellent actor of character voices. Narrative sections somewhat unclear due to casual accent used. Some usual Penguin issues about under-researched pronunciation. Good production apart from that.

Amusing

This has been one of my favourite books for many years and is still one I enjoy re-reading. Owen Findlay does a superb job of narrating, getting just the right tone of voice for both male and female characters as well as interpreting the style of the period language.
This production truly deserves the 5 star rating. Heartfelt thanks to all involved.

Brilliant story telling

this is a lovely story that ambles along with a laugh her and there. Easy to pick up and put down without losing the thread.

Narrator speaks too quickly, spoils a good story. Great characters, complex plot well-executed. Classic Heyer.
