Summary

The unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of The Beating of his Wings, the third and final installment in the epic narrative from Paul Hoffman. Read by the actor Sean Barrett.

Thomas Cale has been running from the truth. Since discovering that his brutal military training has been for one purpose - to destroy God's greatest mistake, mankind itself - Cale has been hunted by the very man who made him into the Angel of Death: Pope Redeemer Bosco.

Cale is a paradox: arrogant and innocent, generous and pitiless. Feared and revered by those created him, he has already used his breathtaking talent for violence and destruction to bring down the most powerful civilisation in the world.

But Thomas Cale is weak. His soul is dying. As his body is wracked with convulsions he knows that the final judgment will not wait for a sick boy. As the day of reckoning draws close, Cale's sense of vengeance leads him back to the heart of darkness - the Sanctuary - and to confront the person he hates most in the world. Finally Cale must recognise that he is the incarnation of God's rage and decide if he will stand against the Sanctuary of the Redeemers and use his unique skill of laying waste to all things. The fate of mankind rests on Cale's decision.

Not your average fantasy book

If you could sum up The Beating of His Wings in three words, what would they be?

good fun, accept it for what it is and enjoy

None come to mind

What about Sean Barrett’s performance did you like?

He is a great audio performer, I found this book because I searched for Sean as the reader

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not much, it is not an emotional read

yes, but only if you are prepared for a slightly disappointing end

Which scene did you most enjoy?

its got many great bits

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

when Vague Henry died ;-(

Any additional comments?

the trilogy is fantastic, if not quite dark, but the last 20mins are just a let down after so much great work!

Good book but gets wierd. (Spoiler Free)

This trilogy was extremely enjoyable. It had all the elements you'd want, interesting story, relatable characters, moral dilemmas etc. The only issue I have with it is that it goes all futuristic at the start and the end of the book and in doing so in my opinion contributes little to nothing.

was excellent book abd great performance as all the others but I just felt it was flat at the end and didn't really hold up well to the rest of the book series.

Still one of the best trilogies

Beautifully written. Narrated perfectly. A fitting conclusion.
Didn't post a review on the third book till now but I have listened to this trilogy over and over and over again. It is close to perfection

I will listen to this again and again.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Vague Henri is the most relate able.

Which character – as performed by Sean Barrett – was your favourite?

All of them. Sean Barret creates very distinctive voices/personalities for each character.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes

Any additional comments?

This book is well written with a strong engaging plot. The prose is excellent. I was well satisfied when I finished listening.

Does he get the girl? Does Cale conquer all?

Where does The Beating of His Wings rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is an unusual, bleak, witty and sometimes funny trilogy. The twists are turns are never obvious. Each character is well shaped and engaging although there are not many women. To redeem this dearth there are one or two strong female characters.

What did you like best about this story?

As fantasy fiction goes this is a sophisticated, nail biting tale as bleak as it gets. Not many people could make a story about anti -religious fanatics riveting, harrowing and echoing our time. Using familiar place names and the excesses of human emotions Hoffam invites us to reflect on our own morality and views. If you want to.

Have you listened to any of Sean Barrett’s other performances? How does this one compare?

The reader makes a huge difference to the telling of this story adding to the atmosphere and dark humour.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Its hard not to react to this book, the way the plot builds and the travails of the Thomas Cale and his friends who are put through hell, reviled and lauded although only boys for their unique talents and attitudes to adversity.

Unexpectedly exciting

Well this has to be one of the most unusual books that I have read. As always Sean Barrett sets the ambience to this whole dark trilogy. It took me two days of full on listening to get through and I eagerly anticipated its release. I was not disappointed with any of it. The story is dark and incredibly cruel both psychologically and physically and this last story is slightly drawn out, but it certainly made my heart race. An incredibly bitter sweet ending to the story, but I would, without any doubt recommend this book. It has unusual content, unsual characters all of them with distrinct personalities and great names (!), Cale, Kitty the Hare, Bossco, Vague Enrie. This is a good book and worth the listen.
