About this listen

When an exotic stranger, Vianne Rocher, arrives in the French village of Lansquenet and opens a chocolate boutique directly opposite the church, Father Reynaud denounces her as a serious moral danger to his flock - especially as it is the beginning of Lent, the traditional season of self-denial.

As passions flare and the conflict escalates, the whole community takes sides. Can the solemnity of the church compare with the sinful pleasure of a chocolate truffle?

One of my favourite books quite magical in it’s telling of how a town can be healed if it’s community come together

Full of wonder

I've read this book before but wanted to catch up again on the series before reading Strawberry Thief. I loved the voice of Joanne Harris who really took me away into the world of Vianne and her daughter. I really enjoyed the clash of the two main characters and how the story included many of the different villagers.

Lovely book

This is genuinely a beautiful story with colourful and heartwarming characters. However it took me a number of chapters to get use to the story set in France to be read with an English accent. I had to leave and return to the book to adjust to this performance that puzzled me. Maybe it won’t bother you.

Beautiful story but read with an English accent!

An intertwined storyline, beautifully written and narrated. The different POVs were interesting and helped progress the story in an interesting way.

A hint of magic, beautiful prose and of course lots of chocolate! Even better on reading it for a second time!

An enchantingly beautiful story. The magic and folklore interwoven with the basic mundaneness of daily life completely capture the imagination. The juxtaposition of Vianne's decent, true kindness and decency against the fake, forced "morality" of the faithful is perfectly written. Highly recommended and a great introduction to Joanne Harris

Enchanting

This was a beautifully read story which captivated my attention from start to finish. I only wish it had been a longer book.

Lovely story about a newcomer to a French village who opens a chocolate shop. Interesting mix of magic and religion, life and death.
