Summary

A spellbinding retelling of the story of Troy drawn from the perspective of the fearless women at the heart of it all.

The House of Atreus is cursed. A bloodline tainted by a generational cycle of violence and vengeance. This is the story of three women, their fates inextricably tied to this curse, and the fickle nature of men and gods.

Clytemnestra

The sister of Helen, wife of Agamemnon—her hopes of averting the curse are dashed when her sister is taken to Troy by the feckless Paris. Her husband raises a great army against them and determines to win, whatever the cost.

Cassandra

Princess of Troy, and cursed by Apollo to see the future but never to be believed when she speaks of it. She is powerless in her knowledge that the city will fall.

Elektra

The youngest daughter of Clytemnestra and Agamemnon, Elektra is horrified by the bloodletting of her kin. But can she escape the curse, or is her own destiny also bound by violence?

Not Saints best, but a very good read!

Ariadne still towers miles ahead of this for me, but still an amazing book by Saint and worth a listen!

Enjoyed 2/3 of it

I enjoyed Clytemnestra's and Cassandra's sections of this book but Elektra's sections are intolerable! She is absolutely awful with zero introspection which makes her sections drag on. Real shame because I really enjoyed the other parts.

Not worth it

I really struggled with this book. The performances were good but as others have said, Elektra’s chapters/story were not enjoyable at all.

Beautiful retelling of Troy

Moving between the three female characters and the retelling of the fall of Troy through their perspectives was brilliantly done.

A brilliant retelling!

A wonderful feminist retelling of the curse of the house of Atreus from the voices of Clytemnestra, Cassandra and Elektra. I really enjoyed that each character was narrated by a different person — fantastic reading by all.

Great read

Lovely use of different perspectives and I would definitely recommend. I love how it shows the very different opinions of deferent people and it really makes me think. I loved it.

Mothers, daughters and revenge

Clever alternative take on the attitudes and motivations of three women bound together in this classic tale.

Slightly disappointing

After 'Ariadne', by this author, and a host of retellings by numerous others, I found this rather heavy going. For most of these re-wtites I've been swept along as the story and characters unfolded. Always wanting to hear more and having to tear myself away. No such trouble with this volume. I persevered to the end just to see how it would develop and tie things up. I wish I hadn't. 'Ariadne' was excellent and I'll still probably try out the author's other publications.

Not my favourite

It was a wonderful book, but I feel like Ariadne and Atalanta were better. I feel like Electrabel was a minor character in this book even though she’s the title character. It could have benefited from a more accurate title.
Otherwise it’s brilliant just like Saint’s other works

Audible ruined it for me

I really wanted to enjoy the story, however I had to give up listening to it on audible as I couldn’t stand the sound of saliva coming from one of the narrators. I ended up buying the book and reading the rest of it myself. Such a shame!
