Summary

A Warhammer Age of Sigmar novel.

Witness the destructive forces that are on the rise in the Realm of Beasts first-hand, and see the indomitable defences of Excelsis tested like never before.

Listen to It Because

This tie-in novel coincides with the launch of Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Dominion, and it brings you right up to date with the events that are taking place in the bestial realm of Ghur.

The Story

In the rain-soaked shanty towns of Excelsis, sellsword Niksar Astaboras drunkenly barters his way to a meaningless existence. Little does he care for the war that rages between men and monsters beyond the city walls, despite portents of its encroaching threat. Mortal life in the Realm of Beasts is short enough, and to leave the shelter of civilisation is to surrender to certain death.

But death is coming to Excelsis. The forces of Destruction are on the move, and the realm quakes with each thunderous step. In the wildlands, a sinister new foe overwhelms even the mighty Stormcast Eternals. Yet just as all seems lost, an unexpected champion rises – one to whom Niksar is inextricably linked – ready to lead a crusade into the very heart of darkness. Embroiled in this harrowing journey, Niksar is forced to choose between loyalty and the chance of survival, and in so doing discover his true worth in the greatest battle yet against the savage forces of Destruction.

This was a great introduction to the new edition of AoS with a good selection of flawed characters who all develop in interesting ways as the story develops. The Kruleboyz don't appear until rather late in the story, but when they do it is impactful. The narration by Richard Reed was great.

Great Age of Sigmar story. Good mix of different races and perspectives in there. Does a great job of further humanising the Stormcast Eternals by showing their varied ways of interacting with, and perceiving mortals, and explores some of the reasons those differences exist. Also how they’re in turn perceived by mortals.
The mortals in question are very well written, with brilliant character building throughout the story. Even side characters get fleshed out to the point that you’re fully invested in them. And it’s all performed brilliantly! Great pacing, clarity, and characterisation. You can always tell who’s talking by their voice which, with a large & varied cast of characters, shows top tier voice acting!
Highly recommend it.
I listened to the first 20 hours of it over three or four days, without realising it.
The audio version of a book you can’t put down.

Brilliant!

Whilst it's an enjoyable easy listening and the characters do develop well, there seems to be a few sprints when a jog would have been prepared in the story and vice versa. So possibly a review of what got edited out, might be welcomed.

Overall, my take away is the Orruks and the laughter noise that emits from their shields. That was interesting, given my Orruk army being assembled.

First thing I've read from the Age of Sigmar collection and it is a great starting point.

Great Story

The narrator's performance truly elevates the audiobook, making it a more enjoyable experience.

I find myself on my third attempt to finish this book. The first time around, I had to stop very early on because I was struggling to connect with the characters. The second try was a bit better, but I still found myself losing interest around the two-thirds mark. The story itself isn't bad; the basic concept is solid, and it serves as a decent introduction to the world of AOS - so other's mileage may vary.

The main issue, if there is one, is the absence of those "wow" moments or gripping hooks that would keep me fully invested. The writing quality ranges from passable to good, and while the story eventually becomes coherent after some initial confusion, it still lacks that certain spark. I must admit that the narrator's performance has been a saving grace, without which I doubt I would have made it as far as I have in the audiobook.

Perhaps the most significant drawback is the characters themselves, who come across as rather generic. Had I encountered this book when I was younger and less familiar with fantasy literature, I might have been more forgiving. However, at this point, it just doesn't captivate me, and I find myself longing to dive into a different read and counting down the time left until it finishes.

While I may eventually complete it for the sake of closure, I could just as easily leave it here and never return to it again. Which is disappointing, as I am quite fond of the AOS universe.

First warhammer book I've read/listened to
