Summary

A Warhammer Age of Sigmar novel.

In Shyish, twin towns face horror - the spectral hordes of Lady Olynder will soon rise and devour their souls. One hero must stand against them - but can he face the Lady of Sorrows?

Listen to It Because

Get an insight into life in the Realm of Death, and discover how its inhabitants deal with the constant threat of spectral horror.

The Story

In the deathly realm of Shyish, the Twinned Towns of Westreach and Eastdale exist on the edge of annihilation. Once in each generation, the hosts of Lady Olynder rise from their tombs to slaughter the towns’ inhabitants, and for centuries the nighthaunts have been turned back, but only after the fiercest of battles. Now, the wizards in the ancient Belvegrod lighthouse have deciphered a prophetic vision that offers a chance to break the curse placed upon the city. The hero Jahangir is fated to lead a desperate mission against the Mortarch of Grief and free his people from this menace once and for all. But is Jahangir equal to the ordeal before him? Can the courage of mortals stand against the undying malice of the Lady of Sorrows?

One of my favourite WH audio books!

The reason why I now play Nighthaunt instead of Stormcast. Excellent narration and story is gripping. The Lady is a crafty one 😉

A Ghastly Tale

'Lady of Sorrows' by C. L Werner is another fine addition into the Age of Sigmar range of novels, and would likewise perfectly slot into the Warhammer Horror range of publications. It is a tale of spectral horror full of haunting ghosts, eerie coastal settlements, a Pharos lighthouse, and a generational curse. The characters all felt compelling and their adventure was easy to follow. I'd highly recommend giving this novel a listen!

A difficult journey of dread and desperation

Throughout this book, there are both clear and hidden dangers that reach out and sometimes grasp a character or two to their doom. There is no plot armour. The characters do what they can to overcome prejudices against one another as they quest together to break a curse, but some do not overcome them, and that leads to tension, despite the victories they win together on their journey.

Slow start but keep with it!

Like many GW novels, there was a bit of a slow start and many focal characters to try and remember. As it progressed, the cast became smaller and their adventure development into a typical 'will they', 'won't they' survive scenario with plentyof unexpected twists....it does keep you guessing to the end. I enjoyed the twist and preferred this type of outcome... makes a bit of a refreshing change.

Wow! What a story!

We’ll that was not the ending I expected at all! I can’t say why as that will spoil it for you! I loved the atmosphere of the book at that was down to the skill of the narrator (Richard Reed). It flowed at a nice pace and I got really invested in the characters. This has become my new favourite!

Quality Age of Sigmar Tale

Excellently read, compelling characters, some interesting twists and turns but ultimately a fairly predictable ending.

great performance and a decent story.

Classically CL Werner, the story is episodic as heroes face trial after trial. Ultimately the ending creeps up faster than expected and is only rounded by epilogue.
This is my favourite of his works I have read so far however and the performance of Richard Reed leads to an entertaining and enjoyable audio book.

excellent

L J wener is one of the few authors who aren't afraid of telling stories that don't always end in a predictable way.

Engaging and unpredictable listening

A great story with lots of twists that don’t follow typical fantasy novel plots. Felt like a Dungeon and Dragons story arc with interesting characters without any single one being overbearing.

I would warn it lacks world building of the AoS realms and I think I probably benefitted from listening to Soul Wars and Realmslayer first.

The narration was also great with no cringey voices I can recall, a definite bonus to any audiobook.
