About this listen

A world on the precipice of the apocalypse. A secret forged in the flames of war. A chance to start over.

For John Sutton, only one of those three things matters.

Retired from a decade of brutal war, he wants nothing more than a quiet pastoral life while he does his best to stem the steady increase of his Doom Points before they hit 100, signaling the start of the end.

He’s been given a small farm on the outskirts of the empire as thanks for his service, but no matter how far he travels, it's impossible to escape the war's devastating effects on the world.

Bandits, suspicious townsfolk, a mysterious pair of siblings, and a secret that lurks in the mountains all threaten John’s peace. It will take all of his considerable power to keep from burning everything to the ground.

Don't miss the start of the next great Fantasy LitRPG Series by Seth Ring, author of Nova Terra. Pre-order your copy today and explore a world whose secrets have been buried under decades of war.

About the Series: Mixing slice-of-life with epic fantasy action, mystery, magic, cultivation, and a broken game system that seems determined to make everything as hard as possible for the already overpowered protagonist, this LitRPG/GameLit series is perfect for those who enjoy exploring rich worlds and complex characters.

love the narration - unlike so many audiobooks, this one isn't ruined by poor narration. I've noticed recently that audio books aren't getting proper editorial attention and it's not good enough! I'm sick of words being mispronounced - not even complex words or words with alternative pronunciations - simple words like Cupid's bow being pronounced Cupid's Bough (the most recent and annoying example I can think of at short notice). Whoever did this narration's recording has done a good job: no sibilants, no plosives, no annoying breathy narrative or excessive mouth sounds. I know some people "like" breathing sounds during narration but I'm talking about sticky, clicking mouth sounds and lips smacking. ugh. it's horrible. Thankfully this has none of that nonsense.

The story is well written - it builds well while giving small clues as to what's happened previously, so the reader can guess at what will happen next or where the story is going but not necessarily always be correct. I find that to be a nice way to engage listeners in an audiobook, which can be a rather detached experience when a story isn't very interesting.

I haven't read many of this style of book before so I was interested to see the way it was done here... the last book I read that was LitRPG had an awful habit of listing all the stats over and over and over again; not little summaries either - huge lists of manna xx; life force xx; skills xx; health xx and so on... just lines and lines of stats that in a realm game.are relevant, but not in a story where you aren't interacting and the stats mean nothing! I don't mind a reminder now and again, but not four times every chapter! Thankfully this story doesn't do it that way - stats, when mentioned, are concise, very short indeed and RELEVANT.

Anyway, I liked it. I will listed to more.

a nice story that builds well and has lovely narration.

At the end of a hard and long fought life, our protagonist John is spending his pension working a small plot of land. The book is very well crafted and full of original and imaginative ideas within the #litRPG genre. I can't wait for the next one 📚 5/5⭐ #BookReview #booktwt and
