Summary
Zunächst wirkt der Etatsrat (ein höherer Beamter) zwar skurril, aber nicht gänzlich unsympathisch. Im Laufe der Handlung wird er jedoch immer unheimlicher. Auch sein Sohn mit dem ungewöhnlichen Namen Archimedes tritt als fröhlicher und eigentlich liebenswerter Gesell auf. Aber sein Abstieg ist unaufhaltsam. Alles läuft unaufhaltsam auf eine Katastrophe zu, an der des Etatsrats verschlagenes, hinterhältiges Faktotum namens Käfer seinen Anteil hat. Eine verstörende, indessen meisterhaft erzählte Geschichte.
