Der alte Reinhard Werner erinnert sich darin an die anrührende Kinder- und Jugendliebe zur fünf Jahre jüngeren Elisabeth. Eine Liebe, die sich für ihn nie erfüllte und in deren Folge er sich für seinen Beruf, das Sammeln von Märchen und Volksliedern entschied.
