Summary

The number one Sunday Times best-selling novel! Three women. A chance to rewrite history....

1918.

The Great War is over and Clara Carter has boarded a train bound for Cornwall – to meet a family that would once have been hers. But they must never discover her secret....

1939.

Hannah has always been curious about her mother’s mysterious past, but the outbreak of the Second World War casts everything in a new light. As the bombs begin to fall, Hannah and her brothers are determined to do their bit for the war effort – whatever the cost.

2020.

Caroline has long been the keeper of her family’s secrets. But now, with her own daughter needing her more than ever, it’s time to tell the truth – to show Natalie that she comes from a long line of women who have weathered the storms of life, as hardy and proud as the rugged Cornish coastline....

From the Sunday Times best-selling author comes a sweeping, epic novel of mothers and daughters, secrets and lies and a love that lasts a lifetime....

Loved loved loved this book

Loved each character, I felt like I knew them, you could feel you were there in every chapter & Fern’s voice is warm as she tells the story it opens up a story which has something special in there - a family history- the attachment to that comes across in the book- I didn’t want it to end

A beautiful story, full of twists and turns

Having heard a lot about this book, and having lived (and long to return) in Cornwall, I wondered if this would fall short. But I have so enjoyed the twists and turns this book took me on. It made me laugh, feel emotional, and reminisce in many parts. Beautifully told and written. A definite recommended read / listen!

Enjoyable story but prose weak

I essentially enjoyed it. I like historical fiction which is why I bought it, I also like Fern. The prose was not good at all, it felt like I story I could write myself. If it had a proper narrator it may have sounded better, however I didn’t mind Fern reading it, it reminded me of having my mum read me a story. I enjoyed it but it’s not the usual standard of book I enjoy.

very average

to be fair this isn't my usual genre so probably was never going to like it, Really only tried because I like the public personna of the author.. however story line predicble, prose not great, and sadly Fern reads like a reasonable English teacher, the book would have been elevated significantly if she had paid the money and hired a proper narrator.. unconscious incompetence or greed??

Didn’t want it to end

I adored this book. The characters, the love story, the history. In addition, finding out the story was based (loosely) on author’s real family made it even better. Two days on after finishing & I’m still thinking about the characters & wondering what they are up to.

Excellent read

A very emotional read, Clara was a real mother, with a true mother's care and love.
