Summary

The Classic WWII Romantic Thriller That Was Made Into the 1940s

Film Noir Masterpiece Starring Barbara Stanwyck and Errol Flynn!

After learning her husband is dead, Sandra Marshall visits his remote family estate to claim her inheritance. There, Sandra faces a cold reception from her husband's uncle, research scientist Mark Caldwell, who is also the administrator of his rather large inheritance. For some reason her husband had never told his uncle about their wedding and he accuses Sandra of lying about the marriage, but allows her to stay until he can verify her story.

However, her husband's teenage niece, Julie, welcomes Sandra with open arms. But soon tells Sandra that Mark is holding her prisoner and that strange things are going on in the sealed-off area of the mansion where he does his research. Julie also implies the other family members and servants are not telling the truth about the circumstances of Sandra's husband's death. Mark defends himself by saying Julie has an overactive imagination, leaving Sandra to wonder who and what she can believe. Sandra determines to find out for herself. Not realizing that in doing so she will become marked for murder by one of the most brilliant and scheming intellects she has ever encountered.

Unexpectedly good, recommended

This was an lovely, unexpected find. I chance upon it as I liked the premise and was curious to see what and Edgar Allen Poe Award Winner would be like. The answer is: Marjorie Carleton does suspense well. It's not a long book, but following the first hour the suspense really gets going and remains pretty taught all the way up until the end. The character is likeable, resourceful and believable and the time period is very atmospheric. The only criticism I'd have is that decline in tension is perhaps a bit too abrupt, but generally a great book and one I may relisten to again.

Memories.

How fascinating to listen to a book with such amazing English language. It was like going back to the past. The words used and the diction made it very interesting listening. Even though it is an old tale it still reads well. Great story, loved the narrator. Good descriptions with out being boring. Glad to have read this tale.

brilliant!

At the beginning, I thought this was not going to be a favourite of mine. How wrong I was. Sandra marries a man in order to help him gain control of his inheritance. Several months later, she discovers he is dead. From then on I was gripped. Not only is the story well written, with brilliant imagery and characterisation, but is further brought to life by a talented narrator, giving each character a distinctive voice. Well done both of you. Five stars all the way.
