Publisher's Summary

Still traumatised by her brush with a psychopath, Detective Cassie Maddox transfers out of the murder squad and starts a relationship with fellow detective Sam O'Neill. When he calls her to the scene of his new case, she is shocked to find that the murdered girl is her double. What's more, her ID shows she is Lexie Madison - the identity Cassie used years ago as an undercover detective.

With no leads, no suspects and no clues to Lexie's real identity, Cassie's old boss spots the opportunity of a lifetime: send Cassie undercover in her place, to tempt the killer out of hiding to finish the job.

"I sewed us together at the edges with my own hands"

I rate this as one of Tana French’s best books, it can stand on its own because of mood and setup.

It is a better book than The Secret History by Donna Tartt and that was a good book, they share some of the setting, mood and some of the social concerns, but the Likeness comes on top because it is less laden with angst and more dynamic. Beautifully written with great characters that jump off the page and a small town that is like every small town, full of secret, full of perceived history and real history.

One of the things that impressed me most was that it felt like it all was happening suspended from shared time in its own universe, without losing credibility. The pace is perfect and the psychological pressure on Detective Cassie Maddox is presented with realism and feeling for her and her likeness.

If you like Tana French this is not a difficult decision, she always delivers more than a thriller, deeper than just a message book or a formula; this is real writing for our times.

    "Wonderful writing and narration"

Tana French is a fabulous writer and this book was one of her best in my opinion. I accept that there are areas which test credulity but I forgive that for the marvellous characterisation and beautifully crafted writing. I disagree fervently with the reviewer who disliked the narration. I thought Grainne Gillis did a great job. Each character was easily distinguished from another and while her Australian accent (used for only a short section at the end) left a lot to be desired, all the rest seemed pretty spot on to me. I cannot imagine how talented you have to be to achieve what she did in this very long book and all credit is due to her I think.

I love family sagas, like discovering different authors and escaping in a story, prefer listening while I do all the boring chores!

"not one of my favourites , worth a listen though."

felt the story could have been a lot better and a tad more believable, liked the twists and felt the characters were an intriguing lot.

The story was ok but too long and slow. I would have skipped some pages if I had read the book instead of listening.

Though the storyline was wholly unbelievable Tana French gave it credibility . I could not put it down . At times the suspense was unbearable . I was totally involved in the drama .

    "Too long"

It started off with an interesting and intriguing plot but became predictable and at times very random. I thought it could have been shorter. At times I was getting annoyed of all the explaining of the missing leads on the phone. It seemed too easy and unrealistic. Not one of her best books for me...

Overly descriptive in some locations. Interesting, rushed ending. Will try another by same author

    "Least interesting of her books"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Good in parts but overall dissapointing

Would you be willing to try another book from Tana French? Why or why not?

I've now read four of her Dublin novels and 5* enjoyed three of them. This was more implausible and less engaging. Never really bought into the likeness angle and struggled to believe in the characters and their behaviour.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Handled the range of character voices quite well but I continually felt she portrayed the five in the house like 14 year olds rather than university students.

Do you think The Likeness needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No, some of the others in the series definitely do, but not this one.

    "Could not stop listening"
What made the experience of listening to The Likeness the most enjoyable?

I must admit at first i thought Tana was going to be one of these writers that has to describe every little thing but after we got passed the murder at the beginning it just got better and better. I think the combination of a good writer and good narrator made this an enjoyable book to listen to

What about Grainne Gillis’s performance did you like?

I like the face she did not annoy me as a reader

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If it was possible i would have

    Any additional comments?

This was my first Tana French book and before I'd even finished the book i wanted to buy more

"Good Story. Wo Sind De Anderen Bücher?"
What did you love best about The Likeness?

Didn't enjoy it as much as In The Woods but it's engrossing and exciting. This one required the listener to suspend disbelief a little further.

    Any additional comments?

Since it's part of a series, I'd like to hear them all. It drives me nuts that Audible only has some of the series and not the whole thing. Not even in order either. Unless you're prepared to learn German, good luck ever moving on to book 3. Or 4. If you don't care about continuity though you can listen to book 5.

    "Great suspenseful novel"

I read the previous , Faithful Place. I really enjoyed it and liked its hero, Frank. Frank is a small part in this book. I also liked the previous narrator. At first I was not wild about the narrator but she grew on me and was perfect for this novel. I am now a fan of this author. This story is different and suspenseful. The characters are well developed and interesting. I encourage others to jump in and try this novel out.

Not the best of her books, with a strange and improbable story, but the last 2 hours or so saved the book for me.
