Summary

Almost official...

For the kids of the Neighborhood Watch, the final weeks of middle school are interminable. In the fall they will get to attend the Hero Academy, studying to become Just Cause superheroes. Their plans get derailed when police officers gun down an unarmed black man. Annalisa, aka La Capitána, gets video of them trying to cover up the killing.

The incident leads to protests, which inevitably turn violent as emotions run high. The kids of the Neighborhood Watch do their best to calm things down and keep people civil, but situations escalate and people get hurt. How can a group of 14-year-olds keep their hometown from dissolving into riots, especially when the protests attract the attention of a pair of supervillains who thrive on chaos?

Diverse story and hero's but still great

I loved the first book featuring The neighbourhood watch a teenager super hero team so was really glad to find out they had another book following there adventures. The first book followed them as they dealt with teenage stuff like emotions and bullying, all while taking down a super villain. This book is very different but just as good and has the twelve year olds battling a problem that not even adults in the really world knows how to deal with, racism. I thought the author covered the subject well and showed the struggles the young hero's went through trying to decided what to do about the problem. Stand up to racism, even though it could escalate the already volatile situation or stand up for the police officers even if people felt like they were turning there backs on them. All of course with a super villain or two causing chaos. As well as tackling a difficult subject I also liked that the author made the characters in this team so diverse from a wheelchair bound techno geek to a gay hothead (literally his super power is his head catches on fire when he is mad) all are great and like able. I also liked that when it got to hot to handle they weren't afraid to seek out the junior members of the Just Cause team in Chloe Wyld who if you have been following the series we have already met. I look forward to following them again as they join the Just Cause academy.

When two white policemen kill an unarmed black man Annalisa, aka La Capitána finds herself in a difficult position as she filmed the aftermath, were the two police officer's discuss what there story is going to be. The situation is already explosive as the community turns against the police. Her team is divided as to which side they should be standing up for and it gets worse when two team members get hurt. It's to much for a group of teenagers who should be celebrating the last days of school before starting at the Hero academy, not stopping vigils from turning into riots. When two super hero villains are expected to make an appearance to disrupt the peace gatherings Annalisa has no choice but seek help from a real super hero team because looking after her neighbourhood has turned into a full team job and she is missing to many classes.
I like the narrator. She uses her voice well to bring you lots of different characters.
