About this listen

Stephen Dando-Collins paints a vivid and definitive portrait of daily life in the Tenth Legion as he follows Caesar and his men along the blood-soaked fringes of the Empire. This unprecedented regimental history reveals countless previously unknown details about Roman military practices, Caesar's conduct as a commander and his relationships with officers and legionnaires, and the daily routine and discipline of the Legion.

From penetrating insights into the mind of history's greatest general to a grunt's-eye view of the gruesome realities of war in the Classical Age, this unique and riveting true account sets a new standard of excellence and detail to which all authors of ancient military history will now aspire.

I thought this was a fantastic book. Very well researched , it explained Roman thinking and attitudes as well as pure military history. It did get a bit repetitive with battle after battle , but that’s Roman history for you. I learned a lot from this book and highly recommend it

I wondered if this was going to be engaging. I have several other classical era histories and they are as exciting as paint drying. However this modern text about a classical period kept me engaged to the end. Definitely an eye opener to not only Roman warfare but politics too. You rapidly realise history repeats itself. I listened to Ceasers March on Rome as the Wagner mercenaries were on the road to Moscow. Yep, well worth a listen.

surprisingly listenable

Great listen but use of modern titles gets a bit annoying, it’s not hard to work out for the reader once the modern and ancient titles have been explained so no need to dumb down.

This book follows the 10th Legion, it’s a great listen and gives a view of life in the Legion and covers a number of battles in great detail, I highly recommend this audiobook.

A great listen one of my favourites

Amazed at the distance travelled by the Roman armies. They could have been quite successful if they had just stopped fighting each other.

Great, I would listern to this again and again.
