The Night Lords were once among the most potent forces of the Imperium, Space Marines who used fear itself as their weapon. Now, cast adrift from the Emperor's light and hunted as heretics after their monstrous betrayal, the Night Lords clad themselves in symbols of death and fight the Long War, bringing pain and terror to all who worship the corpse-god of Terra. A summons from Warmaster Abaddon sends these rebels on a dangerous journey that leads inexorably to a conflict with the Emperor's chosen warriors, the Blood Angels.

Summary

Never having hidden his resentment for his brothers, he now carves a bloody swathe through the galaxy in the Warmaster's name, with the Heresy providing a convenient excuse to indulge his love of brutal warfare. One of my favourite Warhammer performances to date. Compelling story, excellent characters, superb sound, phenomenal cast and written by Aaron Dembski Bowden. No higher praise can I give. The cast make each character feel unique and alive, while the story really cements why we love the World Eaters. MUST read if you're a Horus heresy fan.

The Blood Must Flow
"Butcher's Nails" is not a mere audio book, it is a performance. Every voice was tailored for their role, bringing their respective characters to life.
As brief as it is, this drama is the audio equivalent of bloody-rare prime rib from start to finish, juicy and delicious. It helps flesh out the oft-overlooked significance of the piece of Archaeotech that was hammered into Angron's brain, as well as the gladiatorial philosophy that defines the maddened Primarch and his World Eaters.
Stay a while and listen, you won't regret it.

More of a Play Book vs a Story Book
Performance - Best category here, being not only was it great, they even add extra sound effects such as chainsaw axes and bolter fire to create a better immersion, which was a nice touch. All the voice acting was acceptable to very good, Angron, the Primarch the story revolves around, being the best.
Pacing - Moderately fast, with only moments of flash back or dialogue between Angron and Lorgar, Primarch of the Word Bearers, slowing it down for reasons of character development or insight for Angron
Script - The script was okay, nothing majorly insightful or special here, best performance of the script was when Lotara Sarrin, commanding officer of the World Eaters flagship Conqueror, was prepping commands to ready the ship for full battle.
Story - Here is where it can be better and performed the poorly, the story doesn't go anywhere, it really just describes an event where 2 legions interaction with an Eldar fleet, with the Eldar being easily overpowered and destroyed (so no suspense here).
All in all - Its not a book about story or adding onto that in any meaningful way for the Warhammer 40k series, its just a well done display of an action packed event, hence its more like a Play then a Story. In the sense of a Play it has done very well, if you just want to listen to some hack and slash gruesome beat-down for entertainment, this will work for you. I personally am a story kind of person, so for those looking to glean some extra information about Warhammer 40k or hoping to find something to add onto nudging the Warhammer 40k story a needles length more forward - this is not it.

The Butcher's Nails hummed in the meat of his mind
What did you love best about Butcher's Nails?
Unlike other Black Library titles that were very quiet, Butcher's Nails came across as loud enough on my standard volume setting (standard setting meaning the volume to which the majority of my books can be listened to without having to increase or decrease the volume).
Another highlight was the story and performance; you feel the Butcher's Nails, the need to kill, the need to fight - the agony of the World Eaters and their Primarch come to life through the narrator and voice acting team.
What did you like best about this story?
The depth of detail the writer provides when discussing the culture and behaviour of the World Eaters and their Primarch.
What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Being an audio drama, narration is everything: were this to be just text one would miss out on the feeling and emotion that comes with narration.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Being only an hour, yes it was definitely something I wanted to listen to in one sitting.
Any additional comments?
While a small problem to some (or most) volume was key; not having to raise the volume by one to two notches made all the difference as after this drama was concluded all I had to do was return to the other book(s) I was listening to and not have to re-adjust the volume so that my ears do not hurt.
After discovering that the volume of this production was loud enough, everything else came together nicely - great story and a great listen for anyone wishing to know more about the Heresy-era World Eaters and their Primarch.
