About this listen

'It followed me home,' he said conversationally.

In a rural northern village, legend tells of a ghostly black dog that appears from the darkness before you die.

Shadow Moon has been on the road a while now, but he can't walk any farther tonight, not with the rain lashing down. Gratefully he heads home with a nice English couple, who offer a box room, hot whisky and local tales. But when the man collapses en route, Shadow realises that something about this place has been left untold. Something ancient, something within the very walls of the village. Something shadowing them all.

Beautifully written, Black Dog tells of an American, Shadow Moon - lovely name - sheltering from the rain one evening in England after having walked for many miles that day. He gratefully accepts the offer of hospitality from a couple, Oliver and Moira, but in the way to their house, Oliver collapses and has to be carried home. An eerie and evocative story.

This is a short and quick read, nicely narrated by the authsor, Neil Gaiman, who, without device or dramatic effects, still give a sinister feeling to the book. His voice somehow perfectly fits the words being read...
I have not yet experienced the American Gods series in any form but, because of this delicious short story, realize that this is a failure that I must remedy. Black Dog is a delightful story, highly recommended

As always with Neil Gaiman's works, I simply wish there was more of it. This sentiment is obviously strengthened when the story clocks in at a mere 90 minutes, but it was nevertheless a greatly enjoyable listen. The symbolism is not even slightly veiled and doesn't get explored adds deeply as I would usually like, unsurprising given the length.
I would suggest taking a nice long night time bathbath, or gentle dusk walk for the best atmosphere.

A wonderfully compelling short

A nice little novella about the journey of the mysterious hero from American Gods, especially dropping further hints about his mother which will no doubt be expanded upon in the sequel novel which Neil Gaiman says he is starting to write soon. The only problem with the performance is Neil's attempt at an American accent. The producer should have told him to stick to just reading the story. It's a minor quibble overall but it took me out of the story more than a few times.

This, as you may surmise, is a continuation of american gods, altho it feels a little obscure being all alone in a short story. Cool god and myth ideas tho linked in with human follies and foibles
