Summary

All is fair in love and auto maintenance.

Beau Winston is the nicest, most accommodating guy in the world. Usually.

Handsome as the devil and twice as charismatic, Beau lives a charmed life as everyone's favorite Winston Brother. But since his twin decided to leave town, and his other brother hired a stunning human-porcupine hybrid as a replacement mechanic for their auto shop, Beau Winston's charmed life has gone to hell in a handbasket.

Shelly Sullivan is not nice and is never accommodating. Ever. She mumbles to herself, but won't respond when asked a question. She glares at everyone, especially babies. She won't shake hands with or touch another person, but has no problems cuddling with a dog. And her damn parrot speaks only in curse words. Beau wants her gone. He wants her out of his auto shop, out of Tennessee, and out of his life. The only problem is, learning why this porcupine wears her coat of spikes opens a Pandora's Box of complexity - exquisite, tempting, heartbreaking complexity - and Beau Winston soon discovers being nice and accommodating might mean losing what matters most.

Beard in Mind can be listened to as a stand-alone.

Why did I wait so long to read this?

I put off listening to this for so long, I was scared I wouldn't like it, that it'd be too angsty, that it'd not be a romance.

I'm an idiot! I loved it, I should have known I would, it's a Penny book, I always love them.

I learnt a lot through reading it both about others and myself. It's such a loving book, their romance develops gradually and you understand the mistakes they make. It's not just your cookie cutter standard romance but it still has that perfect ahhh as you end it.

Of course if you've been reading the series from the start you'll want more of the Winston Brothers and the knitting group but that's just as it should be

Beautiful. Loving, tense, complex and interesting

It’s shocking, but this series just gets better and better. I enjoyed the last story so much I didn’t think that this could top it, but in some ways it has.
There’s always something special about a Penny Reid book and this one has so many special moments.
I honestly loved every word. Laughing, crying, exclaiming and sighing throughout. I can’t wait to start the next.

A multidimensional romance

It's a complicated, yet simple, and a whole lot of heart-warming story of two people who compliment each other beautifully narrated by Angela and Chris, my favourite Winston narrator. Don't forget to listen to the Acknowledgements at the end - a touching personal note from Penny Reid.

Amazing story. Love Chris as narrator! I am humbled after the way people are so positive with their lives even after many problems.

Great book - love Penny Reid books and characters

Penny Reid creates such a good balance of loveable (slightly quirky) characters and a story to lose yourself in which is both amusing and emotionally engaging. A refreshing change to the typical romance books out there which, frankly, are naff. I probably prefer some of her other books, but the bar is pretty high as I LOVE her other books. This is still a great listen, and Chris Brinkley (the main narrator) is brilliant. Not as keen on Angela Dawe but she suits the character. Will always buy Penny Reid books as soon as they are released.

all around a winner

I loved this story. Penny Reid has a way of working her beautiful words into a thoughtful educational lesson without you even realizing what is happening. I am not sure this is her aim but after every book I feel like a better, more thoughtful, individual.
The narration is superb! I have come to think Chris Brinkley as the voice of the Winstons and Angela Dawe is amazing! I am glad Mrs. Reid waited until she found the right voice for Shelly. I will be looking Ms. Dawe up and scowering her works.

🤔😍

This book really makes one think. It opened up my eyes to the various complexities of OCD.
I really loved this book. As always, the writing is superb. The narration was wonderful as well.

wonderful story with a nontraditional heroine

I love that Penny (author) broke the mold of the traditional romantic lead characters with 'un-perfect' Shelly. While continuing to tell the stories of the Winston Brothers, Shelly' s character brings light to mental disease and the complexity of OCD. I literally laughed and cried at the end of this book.

5+++++ BEARD IN MIND STARS

Wow… I have enjoyed all the books in this series. I really thought Cletus was going to be my all-time favorite but this one is just amazing.

I am going to admit I never really noticed Beau that much. It was Shelly from the last book that made me want her book. And WOW. Beau is exactly who Shelly needed and Shelly was exacly who Beau needed.

This book made me see OCD in a different light. I have more compassion now than I did before. Shelly is soo strong she is a character that isn’t going to leave me for a long time. Her struggle is real and heart breaking but enlighten as well.

Having Quinn come back for this book really gave me the full picture of how/why Shelly was so determined to deal with her issues and to try and overcome them.

It’s a courageous tall of growth and I admire Penny Reid for writing this book and enlightening us all.
She also gave us a romance and humor. My hats off to you Mrs. Reid. Outstanding.

There are NO words to describe how well Chris Brinkley is in these books, he IS the Winston brother’s period end of story. And Angela Dawe … amazing as Shelly she was Shelly.

*You don't have to like my review but its 100% my opinion, and I am allowed to have it.*

BEAU-tiful

Complex, sweet, sexy, funny. I love that the characters from Knitting in the City were woven into the story. Beau was so sweet. Penny Reid opens a window into the mind of people living with OCD. And there were some surprising twists.

Least favorite of the series

Although I love this author and this series this book was my least favorite. It felt too long with unnecessary situations that felt like fluff to make the book longer. It was interesting to learn about OCD and that aspect felt realistic but others like the celibate hero, Beau getting a mansion as a gift from a friend and Shelly’s family being so completely clueless about her diagnostic were highly unlikely situations.

Couldn't Finish this One

I have been a fan of this series from the beginning having listened to all the Knitting in the city books as well as the Winston brothers. There hasn't been one that I have not liked. I generally love the characters and really enjoy the stories. Not this one. I got bored with the characters and the story felt repetitive. I didn't have any desire to keep listening. I would give this one a miss. But I do love Chris Brinkley! He's awesome!

My favorite Penny Reid!

I've read a bunch of Penny Reid's stuff but this one is definitely my favorite. Both leads are loveable and the therapist sessions provide good mantras for everyone! "I decide what I deserve. They decide what they deserve!"
