Summary

Charlie Gault had all the luck. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the good kind.

It was looking like Lady Luck had quite a grudge against him. In fact, at this point merely crashing the multi-billion-dollar ship he had helped design would have felt like winning the lottery compared to his current dilemma. If only he were so lucky. Things had started off all right - that is, until a freak wormhole unexpectedly swallowed his ship, leaving him stranded on an unknown planet far, far from home.

With the crew’s lives at stake, Charlie had no choice but to stop his whining, put on his big boy pants, and step up to save them all, and much to his surprise, it actually looked like he might succeed. Of course, that was when things really went sideways in ways that made merely crashing on an uncharted planet seem like a walk in the park.

Suddenly, faced with alien space pirates, talking dragons, and something that seemed very much like magic, Charlie found himself adrift, feeling like a space age Robinson Crusoe - only his man Friday was a blue-skinned alien, and this wasn't just a desert island. It was a whole new galaxy.

Not my normal listen, but it’s great!

I’ve really enjoyed this book. It’s not the sort of thing I would pick to listen to but I saw a post on Facebook and loads of people said how good it is.
They weren’t lying!

This book draws you in and moves along at a decent pace with plenty of twists and turns in it. It’s a good mix of sci-fi and fantasy but it really works.

Starting book 2 now after purchasing extra credits just to be able to continue the ride!

Ps, probably the first time I’ve read something on Facebook which turned out to be accurate haha

Great scifi/fantasy combination

I received a free copy of the audiobook from the Narrator in exchange for an honest review.
Which is this:

Bad Luck Charlie is an engrossing combination of science fiction and fantasy, encompassing space travel through wormholes, new planets, magic and, of course, dragons. The story is of Charlie and his crew as they crash land on an alien world and try to survive before being kidnapped by slave traders (well the title does mention his bad luck).

The book is populated with engaging and entertaining characters, with plenty of humour. The pace of the story is great, as Charlie progresses from lowly slave to something rather better (without giving details away) and I liked the descriptions of the alien's use of magic instead of technology. References are made to Arthur C Clarke's famous quote that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" - which works both ways in this book - Charlie doesn't believe that the aliens' magic is not in fact a form of technology.

Gary Bennett does an excellent job narrating. He has a pleasant voice that I enjoyed spending time in the company of, with enough distinctive voices to enable the characters to be distinguished.

All in all this is a hugely entertaining story and I look forward to spending more time with these characters.

A nexus of great magic and scifi

I really liked this book. I liked the world building and Charlie is a great character. It's compelling and fun watching him grow through his struggles.

Really Great Science Fantasy Story

I've been searching for a good Science Fantasy title for a while and I'd been having trouble when I came across this Gem, it's such a good book. An excellent blend of Sci-Fi and Fantasy with likeable characters and a decent story. Better yet there's lots of sequels for me to sink my teeth into so it'll be a series that I spend a lot of time with. A brilliant introduction to Charlie and I cannot wait to see what comes next.

Read by hal from 2010 film Lol

Good enjoyable yarn glad I stuck with it.
I had to increase the narration to x1. 2 as the guys voice was so sonorous!! All I kept hearing in my head was the AI from 2010 " good morning dave".

Nothing is as expected

This is the first book I have read / listened to by Scott Baron and to be honest I really didn't know what to expect as the cover dodnt give a lot away. I went into the book completely blind and was shocked by just how quickly I got caught up in the story. It was completely different to what I thought it would be in a good way. I love the humour within the chapter names and in some sense it reminded me of books such as hitchhiker's guide and discworld. Just the quirky humour contained within. Charlie is such a likeable character and you want him to succeed but he has to be the most luckiest people that has ever existed. Nothing is as expected so many twists and turns . it's just one of those books that has to be experienced first hand. I was given this book by the author/narrator in return for an honest and unbiased review
