About this listen

The start of an epic new historical adventure series from Richard Cullen introducing The Black Lion

As war approaches, the lion will roar…

1213AD.

King Richard the Lionheart is dead, and his brother, John Lackland, sits uneasily upon the throne of England.

Across the sea, Prince Louis, heir to the powerful King Philip Augustus of France, looks to King John’s crown with a covetous eye.

But King John must be wary of rebellion, as well as invasion, for even his own barons would see their king unseated, and the French pretender put in his place.

Thrust amid this tumult is young Estienne Wace, orphan squire to Earl William Marshal – the greatest knight to ever serve the kings of England, and one of the few men who still holds faith in King John’s rule.

Raised by Marshal as his ward, Estienne must prove himself worthy of his adopted father’s name, but acceptance may be the least of his troubles. War is looming, as usurpers emerge from every quarter, determined to steal England's crown from its most wretched king.

Perfect for the fans of Bernard Cornwell, Ben Kane and Conn Iggulden.

PRAISE for REBELLION

'A gripping and tautly-woven tale of a young squire thrust into the house of William Marshal during the turbulent reign of King John. Rebellion is rich, engrossing and beautifully historical, a page-turner from start to finish.' - SJA Turney, author of the Wolves of Oden series.

''Following in the footsteps of the legendary knight William Marshall, The events surrounding the signing of Magna Carta, and the end of King John's notorious reign are brought vividly to life by Richard Cullen. One of the most significant and fascinating periods in English history done justice by an exciting and engrossing story.' - JC Duncan

'This is a thrilling start to a new series, sure to appeal to fans of the genre and those interested in the events of King John's reign and the fabulous William Marshall in all his wonderful glory' - MJ Porter

A gripping picture of lives ups and downs from many years ago

Predictable storyline. Language too flowery at times and labours the stories pace. History around the era was interesting

Average story

I disliked inaccuracies. e.g. King John and Marshall marking the reconciliation with a toast in Anglo-Saxon! Relally? Richard 1 was homosexual it's doubtful fathered any bastards. Etienne was described as a "potential claimant t to the t hrone" Illegitimacy alone would bar him even if Richard had fathered him. Hard to believe a boy in his teens could have bested hardened fighting men. I could go on! Just one last thing. There is no.mention of how the new born Etienne was fed!

Weakly researched
