About this listen

USA Today Bestseller

What's a duke to do, when the girl who's perfectly wrong becomes the woman he can't live without?

Griffin York, the Duke of Halford, has no desire to wed this season—or any season—but his diabolical mother abducts him to ""Spinster Cove"" and insists he select a bride from the ladies in residence. Griff decides to teach her a lesson that will end the marriage debate forever. He chooses the serving girl.

Overworked and struggling, Pauline Simms doesn't dream about dukes. All she wants is to hang up her barmaid apron and open a bookshop. That dream becomes a possibility when an arrogant, sinfully attractive duke offers her a small fortune for a week's employment. Her duties are simple: submit to his mother's ""duchess training""… and fail miserably.

But in London, Pauline isn't a miserable failure. She's a brave, quick-witted, beguiling failure—a woman who ignites Griff's desire and soothes the darkness in his soul. Keeping Pauline by his side won't be easy. Even if Society could accept a serving girl duchess—can a roguish duke convince a serving girl to trust him with her heart?

Another great addition to the Spindle Cover series with a feisty heroine and some heart-wrenching storylines, though I found the hero annoying - his arc wasn't redemptive enough despite his backstory and I wish he'd grovelled a little more.

The narrator's mispronunciations became quite grating after a while - it took me a long time to realise she was saying "Vauxhall" (which she pronounced "Vau-hawl") and even normal words like "hexagonal" and "jackass" were given an exaggerated, posh British accent.

Great story, not such a fan of the hero

Its a real shame that a very good story line is ruined by the horrible narration. Reading other reviews, some people have no problem with an American narrator trying to do a "stiff upper lip" english accent. If she thinks this is what people talked like she has a problem. The upper class may have thought they were superior but they could not have talked in this "plum in the mouth way". She also got so many words and pronunciations wrong that it really gets to you over the 10 hour journey. The story is good. Tess Dare has even worked out a happy ending in a realistic way, rather than suppose that "society" will accept a serving girl into their elite ranks. Such a shame about the narration.

Ruined by Narrator

I believe narrator is American and hard to listen to at times. Not her fault but no English narrator would pronounce Vauxhall so badly.Might seem pedantic but the Home counties girl has the strangest accent.

Hate Narration

Really enjoyed the story. Just enough raunchy in with the romance. Was thrown with the Narraters awful “posh” accent though. Some of her pronunciation is very weird and annoying! But, I was able to stick with it until the end.
