Summary

A Collars & Cuffs story

Since the death of his submissive lover two years ago, Leo hasn't been living--merely existing. He focuses on making Collars & Cuffs, a BDSM club in Manchester's gay village, successful. That changes the night he and his business partner have their weekly meeting at Severinos. Leo can't keep his eyes off the new server. The shy man seems determined to avoid Leo's gaze, but that's like a red rag to a bull. Leo loves a challenge.

Alex Daniels works at Severinos to scrape together the money to move out on his own. He struggles with coming out, but he's drawn to Leo, the gorgeous guy with the icy-blue eyes who's been eating in his area nearly every night.

Leo won't let Alex's hesitance get in the way. He even keeps him away from the club so as not to scare him. And as for telling Alex that Leo is a dom? Not a good idea. One date becomes two, but date two leads to Leo's bedroom...and Alex discovers things about himself he never realized and never wanted anyone to see.

Beautiful story but .... an American narrator?!

What did you like most about An Unlocked Heart?

This is a beautiful story, I love the development of Alex and Leo's relationship, the way BDSM is portrayed in this book is fantastic, it shows the basic principal of Safe, Sane and Consensual. It also shows some of the common pitfalls such as people who don't understand. This is just one of those stories that gives me all of the warm and fuzzies.

What was one of the most memorable moments of An Unlocked Heart?

Oh so many! I love when all the doms show up to move Alex but Alex and Leo in the group room .... OMG So sexy!

Did Nick J. Russo do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?

He did but I was not that fond of the way he portrayed the doms, especially Leo. These guys have very commanding voices, Leo sounded more insipid than Alex, Thomas was also not good and Miles sounded like a twink! Also Leo seemed to turn into some kind of parody voice that at some points that was frankly creepy!

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This story makes me laugh, cry, need alone time with my kindle, sigh like a love lorn heroine .... all of the feels!

Any additional comments?

This book is written by a UK author and is set in Manchester. Whilst it is not overly British there are British phrases and mannerisms which I why I was very surprised to find the narrator was American! As a narrator I liked him, but not for this book. I am terribly disappointed that someone English could not be found, and I'm not saying I wanted Mancunian accents throughout but some of it just sounded weird coming out of an American's mouth

Raunchy easy listen

Good story that's easy to listen to - can stop and start and you don't lose the story. Just wish that books set in England were narrated by some one with a UK accent. That I have to say is the one down side to this book.

Great book shame about American narrator

A story set in Manchester, UK narrated by an American does not work well. His pronunciation grates and distracts from the story. Nice HEA and I love the whole series. Better with a different author later in the series though. Worth sticking with it.

Great start to a series

Would you listen to An Unlocked Heart again? Why?

Yes I would listen to An Unlocked Heart again because I loved the interaction of all the characters, and they way the story was told.

What was one of the most memorable moments of An Unlocked Heart?

One of my most memorable moments in this book was when Alex & Leo finally admitted their feelings for each other, Oh and another one was when Alex put his work colleague Pietro (think that's how it's spelt) in his place by describing exactly what him & Leo will be getting up to later that evening.

What does Nick J. Russo bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I haven't read the book so can't really answer that question

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Alex's dad comes to his room when they are getting ready to move Alex out from the family home, and he finally, for the first time opens up to Alex, that was just beautiful.

Any additional comments?

Great start to a new series for me but I have already started listening to the second book "Trusting Thomas" which by the way is proving to be just as gripping as the first book, and I have just purchased books 3,4 & 5.

lovely book

i enjoyed this book leo and Alex were far apart in terms of age and experience but the story took me through their courtship and the BDSM element was hot. there are a few problems with the recording in the later chapters with some repetitive jumping slightly irritating but did not put me off too much. all in all I enjoyed the book and will read more on the series. see how Thomas gets on.

Enjoyable storyline, awful narration

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Fine to while away a few hours / to switch off to

What did you like best about this story?

The individual characters were fairly well-developed

Would you be willing to try another one of Nick J. Russo’s performances?

Yes, if the storyline was actually set in the US

If this book were a film would you go see it?

Probably not, not unless the storyline was developed a little further

Wonderful story, superbly narrated.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story which is book 1 in KC Wells Collars and Cuffs series. The narration by Nick J Russo was perfect. I'm looking forward to him narrating more of this series.

Good story, not the right narration!

The first 2 books of this series were my favourite to read and I was happy to find them on audible. However, having the story take place in Manchester, Russo was not a good choice, yes he probably gives continuity to the series but this is not what characters from the UK sound like in my head. Yes I have Trusting Thomas, but I won't be getting the rest.

I Was Able to Lose Myself In Story While Listening

Although I had read this entire series a few years ago, I was interested to see if there was a difference when listening to the audible version - not in the words, of course, but in my reactions to the words. I am a very new audible user, having only listened to one other fiction title, so my review of the narrator is not sophisticated like some here in the list of reviews, however, I felt he did a wonderful job. He had a different voice and persona for each character in the story and that was quite complicated. I do have to agree with some others that the lack of a British accent, at least here and there, was disappointing, but because I didn't change their voices to British accents in my head when originally reading, after the initial disappointment, it was fine because it meant it was easier for me, as an American, to not have to listen as carefully as I would have had to listen if he had used too distinctive an accent. As I have some hearing difficulties, this was comforting to not to have to strain to understand accents.

Now as to the story when listening as opposed to reading - I LOVED IT!!! As I indicated earlier, it was a few years ago that I had read the series and there were obviously quite a few scenes that had dropped out of my memory and therefore, although I certainly remembered the overall story, many of the details were no longer in my memory banks so lots were "new" to me. That in itself was a surprise! But, then to have Mr. Russo add his inflection and interpretation to the words for what was actually happening, it increased my enjoyment of Ms. Wells writing. I loved the books when I originally read them and Mr. Russo's narration allowed me to love them again when using a different sense to absorb them. I am continuing with the series, of course, so will see if the rest can live up to the first one!

Great story! Wrong accent in narration.

I loved the story, it's a great start to an absolutely wonderful series.

However, the narration ruined it for me. I just don't understand why the narrator used an American accent for British characters, especially because people in the north of England (Manchester!) have a really distinct, wonderful accent. It makes the characters sound less true, less genuine.

Amateur Writing, Reader Even Worse

Story takes place in the tough industrial city of Manchester, England. But I'd guess that the reader is a twenty year old American suburbanite. And the reader has only three voices: 1) for a if 50 year old dominant - a voice that sounds very much like Kermit the Frog; 2) for all other big hyper masculine dons - a voice just like Andy Sandberg's from SNL when he's playing a California surfer boy; and 3) the reader's regular voice for everyone else, male or female. I'm sure the cheap publisher saved lots of money in hiring this guy to read Unlocked Heart, but save your own and look elsewhere for an audiobook.

I loved it! this is one book I could reread again and again. I love the fact that Leo is so observing and how he pursues Alex romantically before bringing him into the bdsm world.
