Laugh-out-loud funny and deeply touching, Beth Hoffman's sparkling debut is, as Kristin Hannah says, "packed full of Southern charm, strong women, wacky humor, and good old-fashioned heart." It is a novel that explores the indomitable strengths of female friendship and gives us the story of a young girl who loses one mother and finds many others.

Sad but good
I read the first book, Tucker'sWay, which was excellent. I couldn't wait to read An Unexpected Frost. The narrator was excellent and the story was very real and honest. The characters are outstanding but you need to read the first book before you read this one. I just feel like Ella's cancer was dragged out a little too much. Otherwise fabulous read. Am getting ready to read book 3, April's Rain.

The wonderful Tucker series continues!
Two years have passed in poverty laced northwest Tennessee since he close of Tucker's Way novel. The characters you loved from Tucker's Way are back. There's Tucker, the poor grandmother that seems to get only bad news, of course. There are also her three grandchildren March, August, and April. Etta and Smiley Carter are also there. This tearjerker novel deals beautifully with happiness after loss and death, Mostly the novel is about deep friendships in the face of death and other adversity.
The outstanding character development is Tucker's Way continues in The Unexpected Frost. Narration is perfect. This is a must listen series, but after the intensity of the first two novels I'm going to take a break for lighter fare before continuing with the final two books in the series.

An Unexpected Frost
Any additional comments?
These comments address the The Tucker Series, as of this writing four novels written by David Johnson. All of the unabridged audiobooks are narrated by Laural Merlington. Lengths vary from just under six hours to just over ten. I was introduced to the first book via an Audible Daily Deal and enjoyed the story enough to finish the entire series.
The stories center around the lead character, Tucker. Tucker is an elderly woman, a victim of child abuse, who has been saddled with the raising of her three grandchildren. The setting is a life of extreme poverty in rural Tennessee.
My initial reaction is positive with a few codicils. Working through all four novels became a bit tedious, many areas a bit too preachy for my taste .. especially in books three and four. The characters were also very teary, lots of crying and angst. For those squeamish of the topic, some terrible child abuse is vividly described. There are many instances that had me rolling my eyes … some situations and character behavior lacks credibility.
Reason I liked these stories? Character development and narration. David Johnson does a terrific job with the character of Tucker. I’m sure you’ll find other characters in the stories that are well developed and believable. Narration by Merlington is excellent … unique voices for all characters.
If you are interested in a familial tale, with character development exceptional, you will enjoy The Tucker Series.
If you’re turned off by books that are very preachy and loaded with christian values, these are not for you.

You get caught up in the life of Tucker
Great follow up to the first book in the series! My only disappointment was that the book wasn't longer. You easily get caught up in the life of Tucker and all those who surround her. The book makes you appreciate what you have and wish for more who are less fortunate. The bond between Ella and Tucker is that of a bond we should all home for at some time in our life. Well written and narrated and I can't wait to listen to the next book in the series.

Wonderful!!! Please put the other sequels on AUDIBLE / WHISPERSYNC
Loving this series. In depth complex characters, codependency and forgiveness, as well as "adopted family" themes. Great depiction of the old Tennessee Hills 45 years ago, yet still applicable today. Fantastic narrator. I just hope they put the rest of the sequels on audible/whispersync. The narration is impeccable and makes the novels come to life.
